I'm using a combination of 20mmx20mm, 40mmx40mm, and 60mmx40mm plastic bases from Renedra – the nice, low-profile ones for an ancients army.

Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) with Litko's sticker magnets that I could use with these? I don't fancy cutting magnet sheet myself and would rather just glue something on.

Thanks!

I use their steel sheet for my bases and love them! I cannot speak to their magnets, but I find the peel and stick part easy and the match to their bases in exact.

I usually get their magnet sheets and cut to fit. I am quite happy with those. Recently I purchased some precut round magnet, but have not had the chance to use it. I imagine the quality is the same though.

I've had their magnetic material for adding under their ply bases – it does the job it's supposed to do well. I had custom sized round bases made for me and they automatically cut the magnetic sheet 1mm smaller so it gives a very neat appearance. I found their customer service to be excellent.

Thanks all! Should I be worried about the magnets losing their "stick" over time?

Bad experience here. The magnetic material they sold me was too thin to provide sufficient grip strength on small stands (1"x1/2" & 1"x3/4"), was sized incorrectly for the Litko bases I bought with them (necessitating trimming every one of 300 bases), and it turns out to be more work to apply a few hundred pre-cut magnets than to place the stand on the adhesive side of a magnetic strip or sheet and run an Xacto along the edge.

If you're only making a few dozen large bases (e.g. Impetus-sized) the Litko pre-cut magnets and wood bases might be a good solution.

I have a bunch with the flex steel bases that are 5 years old and holding strong. They have not peeled off. I think the glue on the sheeting gets tougher as it gets older.

Was more thinking of the magnets "de-magnetizing"? not the glue bit. I've heard about this happening with magnets?

Maybe you – Extra Crispy – are smarter by putting flex steel on the bases and the magnetic sheets in the boxes – since it would be easier to replace the big sheets than the individual base ones?

Flex steel base user here, too. I use that for the bases and a magnetic sheet inside plastic boxes for storage. No issues.

Provided that you store them on soft iron (flexible sheeting or an iron sheet/toolbox) then the magnetic 'circuit' is completed and you will not lose any magnetic 'grip'.

I've been using the self adhesive magnetic sheets for 10+ years and it is very rare to have a problem with the glue coming unstuck. What can be a problem is that it strips off the top dusty layer of cheap MDF or cheap cardboard – use quality materials and you shouldn't have a problem.

This is great, I was thinking about asking this question myself.

So what's safer – magnet bottoms or flex steel ?

If you think about it WD, they have to be the same – the same components in any orientation will produce the same 'grip'.

What you might find though is that using magnets on the bases is cheaper and more convenient (you can 'stick' them to any iron surface). As I use mostly 10mm fig and smaller the extra weight in the base also helps.

They are great been using them a while. I have also had one or two instances of the odd 4 or 5 bases becoming de-magnetised but nothing worth mentioning or enough to change to something else, actually that may of been the really thin magnetic bottoms but again would still use them as it couldn't of been more than a dozen total.

Everything I have have is standing on litko bases with the magnets.

Most of my bases have Litko magnets and I have had no problems. I also use the magnets on the GF9 bargain bases sold at HMGS cons. I have used the round bottoms and the flex steel with no complaints.

Thanks all – very helpful. It seems my fears are unfounded.
