I recently purchased a bunch of US Cavalry and Plains Indians minis at a flea market. They are all painted, although the quality varies quite a bit. Some need a light touch up while others need a redo. Anyways, I tried searching the web for painting guides, but all of the hits were for American Indian paintings (i.e., artwork). I couldn't find anything for gaming or miniatures painting. Can anyone suggest a good reference work? Even if it isn't an official "painting guide", something with illustrations covering the clothes, gear, and markings of the various Plains Indians would be very helpful. If it contains something about US Cavalry, that's a bonus. Thanks, Kevin |

You know, while not an official guide, Fredrick Remington did most of his painting based on having been there – his paintings have a lot of cowboys but there is a good representation of the US cavalry and Plains Indians as well link |

Look at books containing the works of Remington, Caitlin, Karl Bodmer and Frank McCarty. If you are serious about doing some research, check out "Mystic Warriors of the Plains" by Thomas Mails. You can probably get everything at you local library or through inter-library loan. |

A small caveat: Some of Remington's paintings are of the U.S. Army in the mid-1880s depicting a different type & color of belts & other leather gear from that which was used in the 1870s. George Catlin's portraits of Plains Indians were made in the 1830s. Though they are a good source, some items and dress had gone through minor changes by the 1870s. "Mystic Warriors of the Plains" is a good reference & probably is one of the best single references on the appearance & regalia of the Plains Indians. While they don't have color plates, there are good descriptions of the U.S. Army uniforms in "Frontier Regulars" by Robert Utley & "Forty Miles a Day on Beans and Hay" by Don Rickey. |

Also see, "The U.S. Army in the West, 1870-1880: Uniforms, Weapons, and Equipment" by Douglas C. McChristian. |

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. And the local Half Price Books even has a copy of "Mystic Warriors of the Plains." :) |
