I was wondering if anyone had a source for uniforms of the Portuguese troops serving in the Eastern Pyrenees theater. Spanish wore white coats, but I can't find a source for their Portuguese cousins. Thanks |

Unfortunately all my references are in storage, but when I did my Portuguese army for Almansa, they mostly had the grayish white coats with various color facings. I may try to get my stuff back out since I am getting the bug to get back into the period. again. |

The War of the Pyrenees is a really interesting theater because of the various story lines. You have in Antonio Ricardos, one of the best generals Spain produces in the period, but he's nearly 70, hounded by the Inquisition, and his subordinates have a bad habit of ignoring his orders. He dies of pneumonia. His replacement O'Rilley dies on the way to the army. The next man up refuses to take command three times and when he does he gets killed on the same day in the same battle as the French CinC is killed. The French are a soap opera. The First CinC gets depressed and commits suicide (La Houliere). The second, de Flers, is arrested by the Directorate's mission and loses his head. The French then fight a series of battles without a CinC as various division commanders, with a pistols pointed at their heads, fight independently of each other and central command. The third flees to Toulon with his entire general staff, but returns to denounce his replacement to the Directorate. The fourth is arrested and imprisoned. The fifth dies in battle. The sixth, who was also the fourth, is arrested and executed. The seventh is arrested, sent as a prisoner to the colonies, escapes to Britain, and tries to lead a coup against Napoleon. |

French Commanders 1793: Houlier- Died of self inflicted gun wound to the head Cameron (temporary)- Lasted 13 days before arrested and head chopped off. De Fleurs-Arrested, imprisoned, executed after winning one battle. Barbante-Flees to Toulon. Returns to denounce d'Aoust d'Aoust- Wins battle but arrested, imprisoned. Dagobert-wins battle, resigns, arrested, strangled. d'Aoust-runs army while new CinC tries to get out of command. Turreau-Nominally in command of army, but decides to sit this one out. Doppet- Former doctor. Replaces Turreau. Immediately replaced by d'Aoust upon joining army. Comes down with mysterious illness and is bed ridden for months. d'Aoust-loses battle, arrested, executed. All missions recalled to Paris, arrested, executed. New missions celebrate their arrival by purging army of senior officers, both good and bad. You can't make this stuff up. You need a roll for random executions, defections, and imprisonment. |

Hello Joe! I don't have a copy so I don't know what's actually in it but the Osprey Men-At-Arms series has the "Portuguese Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1) 1793-1815". Knotel states that in 1740 the infantry wore dark blue long coats with very large cuffs and a very large broad-brimmed tricorne hat. The grenadiers had tall fur caps with no plate. The entire army wore dark blue coats with white or yellow undergarments, officers had crimson sashes. The uniform did not change until around 1800. Best regards, Glenn |

Blue coats. hmmm. The Spanish invade France with one lousy division and all hell breaks loose. Of course, 7 out of 8 French infantrymen have no bayonets, so that may have had something to do with it. Paris got their skirts all flustered and sent in the ass-kickers in 1794. Seven future marshals served with that army. (Victor, Augereau, Lannes, Perignon, Sauret, and so on.) Small edit. Sources disagree as to the nature of a couple of notable general's deaths. Some sources state that Richardo died of a poisoned cup of chocolate rather than illness (Poison intended for Godoy). Dagobert's death is also a mystery. Illness, strangulation, or poisoning, take your pick. |

The Osprey "Portuguese Army of the Napoleonic Wars (1) 1793-1815" has a table of uniform details for the early 1790s. Basically blue coat with collar, cuffs, lapels and turnbacks in various colors by Regt. There are 26 Regts. listed. |
