The van's engine started knocking even louder, the gauge long in the red. The noise was clear even over the hiss of the leaking radiator. I could feel the looks of fear on my back from everyone crowded into the van behind me.
"I hope this thing doesn't die on us." Stark said grimly.
We left most of the fleeing traffic when we turned off of Ole Brownsville and onto Stage Road. I smiled as I saw Jakes repair shop ahead. Hopefully we could either get the van fixed or steal a replacement there. I pulled off just in front of the locked gate when the van died. An explosion of voices occurred behind me as everyone tried to talk at once.
"Quiet!" I shouted, "Stark, help me open the gate. Then we'll push the van in and see what we can do. Everyone else stay put until we're safe inside the fence.
Most accepted the command but Gwen glared at me, her eyes red from crying.
The Scenario's goals
1-Don't lose anyone
2-get the van repaired or find a replacement vehicle
The Board-
Capt Jake's Repairshop is inside a locked chain link fence.
Across the street are trees that screen a subdivision.
Behind the shop is another subdivision.
The Front
The West
Inside the shop
The East
The Team
Thor, Gwen & Becca n Spike
Cory [age 9] Sue [age8] and Ginger
Stark, Pri, Abu, Shawn [brave civie picked up last game]
A few walkers can been seen. 1st PEF [Possible Enemy Force] is in the SE corner
2ns PEF is in the NE corner
Last PEF is in the NW corner
Well Stark, are you ready?
Lets do this…
We run over to the gate and bust the chain with the tire iron and a lot of swearing
and push open the gate
Pri screams as she slams a zed with the van door
#2 PEF moves up
#1 PEF moves into view, revealing a
bunch of ZOMBIES pouring out of the woods!
The van whines as Abu tries to restart it so he can drive it into the yard
We run over and try to push
We've got company!
Push!
Hurry! Gwen shouts from inside the van
#3 PEF moves up
as does PEF #2, revealing it to be …
a man with a shotgun and a teenage girl with a 30-06
Stark and I struggle to push the van while Abu futiley tries to start it, meanwhile PEF #3 moves into view and is…
the TN NATIONAL GUARD!
We're saved!
Get that vehicle in here! shouts a Guardsman!
Stark and I push like never before as a fusillade of automatic weapon fire covers us
we push and Abu steers the striken van into the yard
as the TNNG lets loose with the lead
The man and the girl rush over to shut the gate while I have a few quick words with the commanding Guardsman
'We're not looters and the van is full of healthy civilians!'
They're here for the same reason we are, repairs
I quickly work a deal with the sole remaining mechanic, repairs so that he and the girl can come with us to safety
but first, to get rid of the zeds at the gate, the fence pole are already starting to give
Stark come with me!
we rush to the corner, to flank the distracted walkers
while the TNNG lays down some hurt
I go over, Katana and Luger in hand
Picking off straglers
and moving up the line, the occasional shots tell me that the mechanic and girl are helping covers my back
as Stark with Katana and pistol crosses the fence and catches up to me
One by one
Back
to back we fight
face to face
covered by the valiant TNNG
We keep
the zombies
off the fence
until there are no more
The New Folks
Earl and Maya
Four Brave Tennessee National guardsmen
the aftermath
We finally got them to stop shooting and Stark and I were able to mop up the last remaining few with out Katanas, but what a mess. We were covered in gore, but laughing to be alive. We quickly got the van into the cover of the shop before we attacked any more undead attention. It looked like a clown car when everyone piled out of the van, but everyone was alive. Earl, the mechanic told us he'd get to the van as soon as he finished up on the TNNG Humvee which wouldn't take long. The Guardsmen told us they were headed to the refugee center setting up at the old Navy base if anyone was interested in joining them. Nobody did, and we pretty much collapsed for awhile after getting cleaned up a bit. Stark and I helped clear a path through the bodys when the TNNG were ready to leave. We watched them leave nervously, but only a few zeds had reappeared and they took no interest in the quiet fenced in shop. Earl wasn't the owner, but was the head mechanic and said that he would have the radiator patched and us up and running in no time as the radiator was just banged up, nothing serious. While he worked, we tried to rest knowing that soon we would have to leave the tenuous shelter of the fence and keep moving to the farm.
WOW, another blast of a game. When the van didn't restart and the 1st PEF turned out to be a mini hoard I though our goose was well cooked. But the two remaining PEFs really saved us. Had the TNNG not been there, Im sure we would have lost someone or a lot of someones. It was also fun to have a fight with my civvies behind relative safety and some heavy guns to bear. But it was a bummer that I didn't get to explore an abandoned building ie the shop because when PEF 2 turned up, I thought it made sense for them to be a shop employee and relative. All in all, a fun game that moved the campaign along. I'll try not to be so long in between games this time.
