I have recently bought some 2mm battlepack from Irregular miniatures. Various tank variety, selfprop guns, planes, inf, hmg, tank destroyers, mortars and howitzers. Even Bren carriers and jeeps I'm very impressed with the models and quality. I'm looking for a set of rules that can be used for the that are a little more in depth than the ones included from irregular. I have been recommended dedicated the Blitzkrieg range but they are out of production till next year and having them reprinted is quite expensive. Does anyone know of a set that they would recommend. |

I have seemed to miss-placed my Hobbit book, I read it back in 1973 while in high school. I am trying to remember the Battle of the Five Armies part of the book to see if Tolkien mentioned any mounted elves? I do remember the wolf riding goblins but can not recall if the elf army was all infantry? Thank you for your help. |

I'm confused… Just ignore the post by zenturtle (it's in another thread). Green beanie's question is in the 2nd post. |

Tolkien does not mention any cavalry for any of the Good army. The only cavalry at the battle are wargs. Of course, if you're Peter Jackson there are sheep riders and battle elk and at least one dwarf on a pig. :-P |

Battle of the Five Armies part of the book to see if Tolkien mentioned any mounted elves? Of course not: no mounted elves, no rabbit chariots, no dwarf elf love trysts no sheep. As Parzival said, that's just a Jascksonism… Grrrrrrrrr! John T |

Revisionist distortion of the BOFA made the thread worth reading. |

He mentions no mounted elves. There were at least 1000 spear armed elves but we don't know how many elves there actually were. There were 500+ dwarves. There were men as well…probably not more than 500 of those. Dwarves were fully armored. Men had longsword and bow. Elves were probably not dual armed like the men were but rather had a contingent of archers. The only mounted units were the Warg riding goblins. |

Indeed, watj shows pretty much all Tolkien wrote about the elven forces at the battle. However since it is such a thin description I think this gives a war gamer th flexibility to ring the changes when making a scenario. The wood elves certainly had horses so cavalry is not out of the question, though likely not a large proportion of the force or 'Bilbo' would have mentioned them, perhaps a small guard for the elvenking. Alternatively you could have them as dismounted due to the rough rocky terrain. |

yes indeed Terrement, lots of High elven cav back in the first age, with mention of horse archers as well as heavy cav. The wood elves got stomped a the end of the second age due to a rash leader, but cat recall if they were mentioned as cavalry. Iirc somewhere in the hobbit it mentions the elvenking riding out to go hunting with his household. |

Thanks again Saber6. That was most helpful. Still would like to know how some body's post keeps attaching to mine. |

Still would like to know how some body's post keeps attaching to mine. When two people post at the same time, the TMP software gets confused and miss-posts them to another thread. It's worse when it is your post that goes somewhere and you have no idea where. |

Yup. What's known in the IT industry as a "race condition". And the more popular TMP gets, the more likely it is to happen! |

Gary Gygax wrote an article about wargaming the battle of five armies. It was back in the 1970s. I will try to find it. |

The elves were an all infantry force but I recall they arrived in Bren carriers and jeeps and dismounted to fight. |
