With the much hyped imminent release of the Horus Heresy "Betrayal at Calth" box set on November 14, will you be taking the plunge into the tragic civil wars of the 31st Millenium? The miniatures in the set make a nice starter army no matter what loyal or traitorous legion you choose. |
Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut | 05 Nov 2015 7:49 p.m. PST |
No, thank you. I burned out on 40K and its derivatives many years ago. I hope it is a seriously fun game that breathes new life into the setting. If it is successful, maybe GW can theive a bit better in the modern marketplace. I wish nothing but goodness for both the players and the manufacturer :-) |
Ancestral Hamster | 05 Nov 2015 7:57 p.m. PST |
No. Barely using what I already own, so why add more at GW's grossly over-inflated prices? |
chuck05 | 05 Nov 2015 8:03 p.m. PST |
Probably not. I have enough unpainted metal and plastic for 40k as it is. I only play a half dozen games of 40k a year tops. Just not worth the investment. I might buy a kit or two for bits though. |
Lion in the Stars | 05 Nov 2015 8:24 p.m. PST |
Kinda tempting, 30k is far more attractive to me than 40k, but that still requires giving GW/Forgeworld money. |
Lee Brilleaux | 05 Nov 2015 10:13 p.m. PST |
I do not give the broken wind of a Christmas elf what GW marketing would like people to spend their money on. |
Winston Smith | 05 Nov 2015 11:39 p.m. PST |
So, are they going to throw 40k gamers under the bus like they did with WFB? |
tnjrp | 06 Nov 2015 12:07 a.m. PST |
That particular box looks to be in the zero-to-negative interest category for me. So no unless they pay me a bit to take the box on. Not sure if they come up with something else I might be tempted with in the context but I somewhat strongly doubt it. |

So, are they going to throw 40k gamers under the bus like they did with WFB? Sooner or Later they most certainty will. |

No, hadn't even heard of it. Not interested in GW for the most part, they have priced themselves out of my reach. |

Nah. I'm not even interested in the figs for other games. |

We have a lot of people playing 30k in our local store. Most of us have pre ordered 1-2 boxes. |
Pythagoras | 06 Nov 2015 4:10 p.m. PST |
It is a dual-purpose board game. |
alpha3six | 07 Nov 2015 4:01 a.m. PST |
I plan to, but I probably won't be in a position to pre-order the set. I think there will be a lot of orders by people intending to flip the components on GreedBay thinking the set will sell out rapidly. |
Cergorach | 07 Nov 2015 11:09 a.m. PST |
Already preordered a lot of BaC boxes, with a healthy discount and depending on how much of the extra characters/boardgames I can sell on to folks only interested in those, it ranges from a decent deal to an excellent deal. All the tacticals, terminators and dreads I will keep myself, but I only need so many Captains/Chaplains… Want to build the original Space Marine (epic 1st edition) in 30mm, this is cheaper then doing the original Adeptus Titanicus in 30mm (6 Warlord Titans)… ;-) Making your boyhood dreams into reality, the problem comes with cleaning all those models, assembling them and painting it all. I can completely understand why folks are not that enthusiastic about 30k/GW/FW, this might not be that expensive, the rest certainly is. One of the HH books costs 70-80GBP, there are 5 already and more coming, also a few smaller books. Then all the resin stuff (I hate resin stuff) and the prices on those… Not to mention all the GW hate, I personally don't care enough about the company behind the products I want… Funnily enough, someone was asking on another forum for an appropriately sized Nebelwerfer 42 for use as a Thuddgun in 40k, anything in 1/48 or 1/35 is actually more expensive then the FW resin model… So while GW/FW might be expensive to certain other aspects of the miniatures hobby, other specific things certainly aren't. @alpha3six: Maybe the first print run, but more will follow. Many folks aren't interested in buying a whole box when they only want one squad or dread from the box, so the might pay a premium for that luxury, the prices do stay close to sane, depending on how popular certain parts are. @Winston Smith: Didn't you know, 40k is being removed from the stores by the end of the year being replaced by a board game hybrid that's previewed in this boxed set. Every miniature now comes with cards and extra board pieces, expect prices to increase significantly 50-100% increase. ;-) Just kidding! GW isn't touching 40k (as they did WFB) as it's currently the golden goose for GW. WFB wasn't making (enough) money to be worth the effort, with AoS they are trying to change that. How well AoS is doing you shouldn't ask a recent WFB or 40k fan, they are not the target audience for AoS… |
wehrmacht | 09 Nov 2015 10:47 a.m. PST |
Yes, I ordered a box, decision solidified by playing a quick game of BaC at the local GW. The rules are pretty simple/straightforward but actually have some modern elements like alternating activations which was neat. If you're into 30K like me the miniatures are a great deal (even if you have to buy extra bolters to match your current force's pattern) but I'm looking forward to painting these models and playing the game. There is no wrongfun here ;-) Cheers w. |
haywire | 10 Nov 2015 9:37 a.m. PST |
It looks like Space Hulk for 40K using hexes. I wasn't and then saw the box contents. Do you have to decide what the forces are? I am confused. But the 30K space marines and that contemptor dread do look nice. |
15mm and 28mm Fanatik | 10 Nov 2015 11:35 a.m. PST |
@haywire, The BaC boxed game can be used in any one of three ways: 1. As an everything-you-need-in-one-box stand-alone board game pitting 30K Ultramarines against the traitorous Word Bearers. The Ultramarines get a 10-man Veteran Tactical Squad, the 5-man Cataphracti Terminator squad and is led by a Cataphracti Terminator Captain. The Word Bearers get two 10-man Veteran squads, the oh-so-cool Contemptor Dreadnought and a pre-heresy chaplain in power armor to lead them. You can paint them in the colors of other legions of course, but the Calth episode in the Horus Heresy canon specifically involves these two legions and the decals and other gaming aids like unit cards are legion-specific. 2. As a relatively low cost way (compared to Forgeworld prices at least) for 30K fans to supplement their existing legion(s), or those who may be interested in getting into 30K a "quick and easy" way to start one. 3. As an alternative option for existing 40K space marine players to bulk up their armies with something that looks a bit different but not too different such that they look out of place in games of 40K. The MKIV "Heresy" armor fits right in with the later marks of armor, and the Cataphracti Terminators are perfect for those who prefer a more archaic style. The original missile launcher below from the old RTB01 "Beakie" box set back in the '80's alone is a fan favorite.

Far better looking than that lousy thing that GW replaced it with. |
chromedog | 25 Nov 2015 4:05 a.m. PST |
GW and my wallet parted over 4 years ago. The models may be nice – but they aren't nice enough to justify the price of the box to my wallet (or wife). Pass, thanks. Besides, I still HAVE those beaky missile launchers. |
ScottS | 25 Nov 2015 9:01 a.m. PST |
If this had come out a few years ago I would have been all over it. But these days I'm just too burned – and burned out – on GW. It's a shame, really. I had a lot of fun with their games, but I just can't do it any more. |
BlackWidowPilot | 25 Nov 2015 9:48 a.m. PST |
Games Sweatshop lost me when they went corporate, arrogantly told us "Yanks" at Origins in L.A. how we were doing the gaming industry all wrong (and they were going to show us how to do it right), and dropped Rogue Trader in favor of 2nd. Edition's cartoon video game style of graphics aimed at marketing to each year's crop of 12-year-olds… I still have most of my original WH40KRT figures, and occasionally I score a few more here and there via FeeBay or at a flea market, but I can get vastly more wargaming bang for my hobby buck through other sources including making my own models from junk. This hobby doesn't have to be a rich kid's game despite Games Sweatshop's marketing department corporate hyperbole (nor should it be). Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net

It looks like I'll be receiving 'Betrayal at Calth' as an early Birthday gift from my cool Mom. I guess GW finally found a way to get me back. XD MKIV armoured Blood Angels, inbound. |

I don't belong here,GW was after my time, but I did pick up a White Dwarf when the first Hobbit movie came out,to see prices on figures. "The White Council": $70 USD for FOUR figures, is that right? |
mashrewba | 27 Dec 2015 4:12 a.m. PST |
I picked up the Calth boards and all the cards, dice etc very cheaply on EBay and play it with my ancient beakies and Chaos stuff. Happy Days. |
TheGaffer | 27 Dec 2015 7:11 a.m. PST |
Focusing on Orks and then space wolves, but the minis are tempting. |
Mithmee | 27 Dec 2015 8:58 a.m. PST |
"The White Council": $70 USD USD for FOUR figures, is that right? Just be glad that they are only at $70. USD Because the price for certain single figures are around $30 USD-$33. So those figures should have been in the $120 USD-$135 range. GW needs to show that they are making a profit and well they do it by gouging their fanboyz. |

Shouldn't "40K" have a pound sterling symbol preceding it, to prepare prospective buyers for their required financial outlay? |
