Looks like I may well be in Grand Rapids permanently around next summer.

Any gamers out there?

You're kidding! I grew up near GR and ended up in Helsinki (and now maybe Athens). Didn't you go via Scandinavia to the States?

I moved away when I went to university and only visit once in a while now, but when I was living in Traverse City (way up north) I participated in several nice, small conventions in Lansing and near Detroit. I got the feeling that most of the activity was centered in the SE, which makes sense given the presence of MSU and U of M, but I'm sure you will be able to find people to play. There are a couple of small colleges nearby – Calvin College in the city and Grand Valley (?) just outside. I could ask my dad (a model railroader) for a list of hobby shops if you like. Chicago and Cincinnati also have their own conventions and are a fairly easy drive away. Oh yeah – Chili dogs at red Lion Inn! And get to know the drive to Lake Michigan and enjoy the beaches!

Cheers,

Christopher

There is a rich wargaming community in Michigan and environs. Check out the HMGS Great Lakes Website:

Every March you should make your way across the border to Stratford, Ontario for the Hotlead convention!

And there's one in Chatham that's a bit closer to the border in Septembers.

CAT – yeah. I figure michigan is almost like coming home for a norseman :-)

Sounds like a good convention scene. That'll be nice :)

You are in for a treat if you like beer as well, Founders is a wonderful location.

I do like beer and Oregon spoiled me in that regard.

Kyote – Im sure a trip down your way could be arranged :-)

I'm in Muskegon, about 30 minutes away! There are a bunch of guys in the GR, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, and Detroit area that game. Look up the folks at Pro or Con and contact Dave Winfree over at I-94 miniatures in Hastings. He's not too far away and puts on some great games. Also the guys at Battle Honors minis also do a great job as well on a monthly basis in the summertime.

Kalamazoo area here, and just getting into Naval miniatures. As for the beer… my best Michigan breweries go about like this:
1) Founders (Grand Rapids)
2) Bastone (without the 'g' (Royal Oak)
3) Vandermills (Cider Mill in Spring Lake)
4) Bell's (Kalamazoo, but not for the beer they distribute, for those they sell in-house)
5) Arcadia (Much improved with their new facility in Kalamazoo)

Nice, always a fan of the beer.

Hopefully the IPA plague hasn't spread that far.
