TSATF was my official introduction to miniature wargaming – and indispensable for maintaining my interest through the years.

Thank you Larry for many many hours of enjoyment.

Very sorry to hear it – I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but have had his rules for about half of my life, and derived more than a few hours of pleasure from them over the years. Rest in peace old chap.

Zargon04 Nov 2015 11:56 a.m. PST

My heartfelt condolences, Larry was I'm told one of the table legs of modern wargaming and brought much joy to the community at large.
Larry, may you roll many 6s at the great game up high.

Swampking04 Nov 2015 11:58 a.m. PST

The hobby has lost one of its true legends and one of its greatest gentlemen. Larry was a true gentleman of the old school, the kind that we so desperately need nowadays and he will be sorely missed by all of those who knew him. I met Larry for the first time when he lived in Hickory, NC and that meeting is one of my fondest memories of the hobby.

Rest in Peace

My deepest condolences to the Brom family,

Eric

My condolences to the family. Larry was a gentleman. I loved his rules sets and still have all of them in my collection being unable to part with them. TSATF was a real influence on the hobby and still has an effect on the way I view wargaming. I never heard anything except praise for Larry. RIP.

The pain may ease and fade over time but his memory will never disappear. A frequent visitor and guest to HMGS-South conventions we always considered him and you part of our family and that makes the loss very personal.

Bismarck04 Nov 2015 12:53 p.m. PST

I am so sorry, Lori and Christy. I loved your Dad like an older brother. Was about to write him, to tell him about the three "Brom games" at this past Southern Front, as well as sending a Marine Corps birthday wish. My life is richer to have met him, gamed together and have him as a friend. I've really missed him since you all moved from here in NC.
Heaven has gained a fine man.

my heartfelt prayers to you both. God Bless and keep you.

Very sad news indeed. Some of us were planning a late night game of TSATF at Fall In. It will now take on a special meaning, but that fact that this has remained one of our favorite "go to" games for so long is a testimony to the impact Larry has had on our hobby.

Condolences and prayers for Lori and Christy. Larry will be missed.

Mute Bystander04 Nov 2015 12:55 p.m. PST

Having sat by my mother-in-law's bed this year when she was departing I know your loss is impossible to find words to express adequately but I offer my sincere sympathy/condolence in your time of grief.

A star has fallen from our gaming constellation.

majed438504 Nov 2015 1:03 p.m. PST

Thanks Larry;
Your work has provided many hours of fun and frustration. The Sword and the Flame is a fun reason to gather with friends for a few hours of amusement. The world is a sadder place without you.

Semper Fi from a old Army guy.

Very, very saddened to hear this. TSATF has been a huge a influence on me, having gotten it as a kid it had a big influence on getting me more interested in both wargaming and colonial history. It has always held a special place in my heart and always well.

My deepest sympathies to the Brom family and all his friends and fans worldwide.

Sorry you had to go so soon cousin. Figured you being a marine you would stay around till I went. You know they play TSATF in the hereafter. You will be missed.

The Great-Grandfather of wargaming in our state.

I'll just bet that he and George Sr. are up there cooking
up a great game of TSATF and getting others to join in.

Goodbye, Larry and thanks for everything since that day
back in the 60's when we met.

Lori/Christy, if there's aught I can do to help y'all,
PLMK.

MacDuff04 Nov 2015 2:37 p.m. PST

Very sad news, the biggest loss for family and close friends but a real loss for us all. What a gentleman and an inspiration and example for us all. I had the pleasure of chatting with him a couple of times but only once got to play in a game with him. at Historicon 2005. I hope Bwanabill has his date wrong as I'd hate to think Larry lodt st El Teb two years running. I had the honour of commanding the Mahdists and what a great group of gamers what a great game and what a pleasure to have soneone like Larry setting the tone by example.

tsofian04 Nov 2015 2:50 p.m. PST

Sad news indeed. He was a scholar and a gentleman and his like is not often met

My thoughts and prayers are with you. One of my greatest gaming memories is being at Historicon for the first time and meeting Larry. He signed my copy of TSATF and treated me like he had known me forever. His rules paved my way into this hobby and that is a debt that I gladly owe. A truly remarkable man, God rest his soul.

capncarp04 Nov 2015 3:48 p.m. PST

To the family: thank you for sharing him with us. He made a lot of people happy with his gaming activities.
To our fellow gamers: let us take a hint from this good man and do our best to share our best sides with each other, and make our gaming something that will attract the notice of young folk who could learn much from our hobby.

Another glass to be raised at Fall-In. I will make a point of it.

nazrat04 Nov 2015 4:08 p.m. PST

Very, VERY sad.

Ceterman04 Nov 2015 4:17 p.m. PST

So sorry to hear the news. He has had a special place in my heart for many, many years. I bought TSATF from Yaquinto, in 1979. I was 22. I'm 58 now, and still play & enjoy every game. In 1997 or 98, I got to play in one of his massive H-Con Zulu games. Me & 2 other buddies all got to play. We all came away so impressed on how truly nice Mr. Brom was & what a great game he put on too. I had 3 Zulu units under my command & all Zulus had to be rolled in on a d20. Most numbers put you in a spot that was on the Zulu side of the table, as it should be. But if you rolled a 20 you came in, unseen, behind the Brits. I rolled 2 20's out of my 3 rolls. Larry got a big kick out of it, because I was coming in on the Brit Cavalry, commanded by a guy who apparently always played in his games & was VERY picky about certain things. Larry did not speak bad at all about this guy, not at all, although I got the feeling he wouldn't mind seeing him taken down a notch or two. Well, his cavalry was scouting forward of the entire Brit force when 40 extremely sneaky Zulus hit him from behind! Many an assagai was washed in blood on that day, I can tell you. Much to everyone's chagrin! His cavalry eventually forced my Zulus back but not after doing some extreme damage to the Brit Cav, and leaving them a spent force. Everyone had a blast, Larry included & even the Cav commander had fun. I will miss you Mr. Brom. My condolences to his family and many friends & I for one will never forget how you have made my life, a lot more fun & fulfilling.
Peter

My condolences. First miniature wargame I played was TSATF. I still remember the game (30 years ago) and enjoyed it so much it got me into the hobby. Much joy has been had since. Thanks.

herzogbrian04 Nov 2015 5:16 p.m. PST

The world is a little less now than it once was.

Semper Fi Larry and thanks for giving us a TON of great, fun games. You will certainly be missed.

My deepest condolences, Lori. Was honored to play several games that he GM's back in the 90's. I recall one, I think a version for the FFL in Mexico. I was in charge of a FFL unit and wanted to move it. So I absentmindedly started to pre-measure how far it was to where I wanted to go. Larry gently corrected with with the flat end of a wooden ruler across the offending hand. I still bear the scar :), and still twitch when I think about pre-measuring move distance!

We will all miss the great gentleman.

Mike

Sorry to hear of this. Speaks well of a man, that he is remembered so fondly, by so many.

Semper Fi! Rest easy, Brother.

Ditto Capncarp, thank you for sharing this wonderful man with us. I played in a number of games run by or with Larry and nicer gentleman I've never met. I'm truly sorry for your loss. Your Dad and your family are in my prayers.

Lori, my condolences to you and your family. TSATF made gaming fun for me. RIP Sir.

Rhingyll04 Nov 2015 6:14 p.m. PST

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Larry, but feel I have known him most of my life. His personality and spirit are reflected in TSATF and formed a mental construct that is him within my mind. He may no longer be with us physically but he will live for me everytime I play a game. I am vowing that each time I play TSATF I will say a mental "Thank you"to him. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Jeigheff04 Nov 2015 6:17 p.m. PST

I am sorry that Larry is gone. I had the honor of meeting him briefly at Historicon, 1998. He was a real gentleman. I'm also one of many who have gotten much enjoyment from TSATF over the years.

Robert Burke04 Nov 2015 6:25 p.m. PST

I never got a chance to meet Larry in person but we corresponded and I thought of him as a friend.

He provided thousands of wargamers many hours of enjoyment playing his games. That's not a bad legacy to leave behind.

He will be missed.

He and his family will be in my prayers.
