"We've been so consumed with Star Wars lately that we almost forgot about that other universe of intergalactic heroes, villains, and rogues: Star Trek. (William Shatner didn't, though.) Well, it won't be long before we can obsess over them simultaneously because Trek is coming back to TV. Well, sort of. And not in a way you might expect.

CBS announced today that it is developing a new Trek series for its subscription VOD platform, All Access, that will roll out in January, 2017. The new Trek, which comes amidst the franchise's 50th anniversary next year, will premiere on CBS and have all subsequent episodes debut on All Access.

But here's the interesting thing: The series won't be tied into the forthcoming film, 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Instead, the forthcoming Trek series "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations," according to an announcement from CBS. (The show, however, is being developed by Alex Kurtzman, who has been a writer/producer on the recent JJ Abrams-helmed Star Trek movies but who isn't involved with Beyond.)

It's fascinating because most of the various generations of Trek have connected both their small screen and big screen stories, but also because worldbuilding and creating a cross-platform universe is standard operating procedure now. —

It's fascinating because most of the various generations of Trek have connected their small-screen and big-screen stories, but also because worldbuilding and creating a cross-platform universe is standard operating procedure now. Marvel does this with its cinematic universe and TV offerings on ABC and Netflix. DC does this with its CW shows. And it looks like Star Wars aims to do this with its upcoming slate of features films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and anthology flicks like the "young Han Solo" movie. For Trek to not follow suit seems odd. This is a chance for the Trek universe to get back into full swing and it's actively separating itself from that notion…"

I find it saddening to see what these idiots have done to the franchise and storyline. You almost wonder if Caitlyn Jenner isn't going to have a cameo appearance to show how diverse it is. They once had a great storyline and then Voyager came along and it went downhill after that.

Actually the Star Trek universe has continued on the web with several series – examples YouTube link YouTube link

Quite a few, generally not bad and worth watching.

Yeah, between Enterprise and Abrams' reboot, I find myself not really knowing what "Star Trek" means any more, other than someone will have pointy ears and someone will be a Klingon.

John Treadaway03 Nov 2015 2:58 p.m. PST

I agree with a lot of the comments here. The Trek "franchise" has no idea what it's doing – and hasn't for a long while.

I will stick to watching stuff on line made by genuine fans who do understand what they are doing.

The rest – Voyager onwards (and including the last few 'Next Gen' films and the last two by Abrams) – are derivative dross.

I suspect any new TV series will follow the same sad pattern.

The proper term for a lot of the latest Star Trek is "Drek"…

jowady03 Nov 2015 7:05 p.m. PST

I really don't want to see any more Star Trek that has any connection to J.J. Abrahms. And I'm not so sure about what he might do to Star Wars either.

I bet they will try to make it dark, gritty and grounded in realism, so expect the crew to go about a ship so dark even a Klingon would feel off kilter, wearing military fatigues and every crew member would be a highly unskilled misanthrope who hates about 1/3rd of the other crew members and will not waste an opportunity to sabotage them even in the worst crisis that threatens them all. While the big theme of the series will be some weird mystery and a lot of spooky stuff going on in the background.

You have not much good expectations my friend…! (smile).

It will be great. Apart from TOS, which I loathe, there's no Star Trek I don't love.

Man, to borrow from Star Wars "I can feel the hate flowing through you" is really on display here. Did JJ put a tribble in everybody's cornflakes?

Sure Trek has been hit or miss for a while, but Star Wars has been ALL MISS since the opening credits of "Revenge of the Jedi", oops I mean "Return of the Teddy Bear Marketing Movie" of course.

Zardoz04 Nov 2015 9:49 a.m. PST

Well, I'm a big fan of the original series and I love what JJ did in the movies. A reboot without negating everything that came before. Genius, and fully in the spirit of Star Trek.

As i said on Facebook when the news broke.
And most agreed.

It has to be set in the TNG universe or prime as it's called.
It has to be sett right after nemesis, we must see the state the galaxy after the dominion war. We nedda long story arch based on return of the sisko.

It has to go back to tng, a ship, exploring, with more political aspepects of ds9.

We also need an anker character, I'm thinking worf or riker.

It would be fun to see if worf could be captain of an exploration mission.
But after ds9 he became ambassador to Kronos.

Was that in the "I hate New Trek" group? That list is a guarantee of failure.

No the official star trek Facebook page.

"…The person behind the new project is Alex Kurtzman, a co-writer behind the underwhelming movies Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). Oddly, Kurtzman will not be writing the new series and is looking for a new writing team to help him work on the project. Kurtzman, to be frank, isn't a very good film writer (he's also behind such recent scriptwriting smash successes such as the Transformers movies) but some of his work for TV has been better, particularly his role in launching the excellent Fringe.

For fans, the most horrific prospect for the new series is that it will be set in the "Abramsverse" of the new films. Unexpectedly, it appears that this may not be the case due to rights issues between Paramount (who have the film rights to the franchise) and CBS (who have the TV rights). The new series may be set in the Abramsverse or the timeline of the original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, although the latter may be considered to be carrying too much baggage for a new show. It's also possible that this new series will launch a third universe or be simply set a lot further in the future than either existing timeline. The only comment on this so far is that the new TV show will not be connected to Star Trek Beyond, the next movie which will hit the screens in the summer of 2016…"

Otherwise known as the "I hate New Trek" group…

The second paragraph in Armand's last post above pretty much sums what I mean what I said I didn't know what Star Trek means any more.
