Awakening the Bear was the first game in the Conflict of Heroes series. This review is about the 2nd edition of this game and what has changed.

Good review, Jason.

I have all the games in the series (1st editions) and love them. My favorite tactical WWII game. I wind up playing CoH every year at Dice Tower Con, usually in 2 and 4 player games. I find that Storm of Steel is my favorite and easier to learn via the programmed scenarios. Not sure why that is for me.

BTW recently I've taken a shine to Heroes of Normandie for its Hollywood approach, and a neat change of pace. That is a game people love or hate, especially the grid game boards.

Excellent series and the computerized version is lots of fun as well:

Some months back, I had started to convert the system for miniatures use on a mat with a hex-grid overlay. I was hoping to use my FOW based infantry and vehicles. I left off the project when I discovered another ruleset to use.
If anyone is interested in the vehicle charts I have done up so far for all the nations you can send me a private email at glenmwilli at msn dot com.

IIRC the game started as a miniature game but he turned it into a board game instead. Just a cool tidbit. :-)

BuckeyeBob,

What rules set did you decide to use instead of CoH?

Battlegroup Panzergrenadier, vers 2. Converted the measurements to hex movement.

Wasn't quite sure the CoH would actually convert well, since other than group movement, only 1 stand at a time could move and I thought that might turn into a pretty slow game for platoon sized battles.
I could see how the players alternating move/fire with units moving 1 hex at a time would work well for firefight between units, esp AFV's and there are some alternate rules on that on BGG. Also on BGG were some variations to other rules esp. concerning variable AP etc that might convert well to miniatures.
Finally the new card system looks like it would be useful for solo play too. I still may go back and finish up what I started since I have all the various nation's vehicles and a hit result's chart based on 2d6 rather than pulling chits already completed.
