I have an ALPS MD 5000 printer that is not working. Its been sitting in storage for a long time. I want to place it up on ebay to sell as parts.

I want to verify whether or not it has the dye sublimation upgrade. Does anyone here who has one know how to verify this part?

All I see is a number on the part MX9B0058H, but I do not know if that is the upgrade or if that is the placeholder for the upgrade.

Anyone know?

Thank you!

This is the dye-sub upgrade component:

To be honest it probably makes no difference anyway – what's left of the Alps user base is pretty much entirely decal printers, for whom the dye sub upgrade's useless.

Hi Dom,

So if I have that piece it is the dye sub upgrade? There isn't a "dummy part" that goes in the same spot that looks exactly the same?

Not that I know of – I certainly never noticed one when I was using a (non dye-sub) MD-5000. Probably academic anyway – I don't know of anyone who uses the Dye Sub in this day and age – it was for photo printing, and inkjet technology overtook its quality a decade or more ago.

Thank you for your help Dom!

Good God, I can remember when dye sublimation printers first hit the market. I tested quite a few of them.

Good bits of kit in their day, but yeah, that day was a while ago now…. ;-)

Haywire, you actually can still find dye sub a lot in the awards & recognition buisness. There is a huge outfit in the us called Johnson plastics.. If anyone would know I imagine they would. They are primarily an outlet for wholesale to the retailers but they probably would know, if you wanted to contact them
