On 20 November in the same format as Lion Rampant, World Aflame etc. I imagine mechanisms will be similar to Dux

It sounds wide-ranging enough to satisfy no one.

davbenbak01 Nov 2015 5:53 a.m. PST

Crap! Now I guess I have to paint all those Revell 1/72 Austrians I've been sitting on for years!

And yet they still can't bring themselves to publish a campaign series book on the battle of Minden, one of Britain's most notable military victories.

Alte Fritz:

The campaign series side of Osprey probably don't know what the war-games rules side is doing ( to put it politely).

Looking forward to it. The rules sets I have by them (that I've played) are quite fun!

Ney Ney01 Nov 2015 11:06 a.m. PST

Similar to Dux? Whys that?

I've read a play test version and they look like they will be a lot of fun.

Joker, Big Red, et al:

Have you tried playing World Aflame, On the Seven Seas, and/or Fighting Sail by Osprey? To me they all seem to lack some play-testing, editing and proof-reading, and because of that I find them not much fun to play. Hence the jaundiced view. But I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise.

waaslandwarrior01 Nov 2015 12:19 p.m. PST

Agree with DAF.
I would be very interested in more Campaign books on the SYW.
And an Essential history on the War of Austrian Succession would be great too. It could be me, but I find it really hard to find a short introduction on WAS.

Will there be proper indexing?

I've played Dux and have Dragon Rampant. I have Fighting sail. From a reader's perspective, they look good. I have not had the time to try out the latter though.

coopman01 Nov 2015 7:03 p.m. PST

Dragon Rampant hasn't been released yet.

Indeed! LION Rampant! I think I have a new and shiny game on my mind! grin

There seems to be a difference between rules as they read, and rules as they play out on the table. I suppose it depends on what you buy the rules for.

The ruleset has been developed over a number of years by Keith Flint – he has set up a website here:

honoursofwar.com

and has a blog here:

keefsblog.blogspot.co.uk

It won't be anything like Dux…

BillyFish,

I have only read them and read several AARs on Keith's Blog. The games look like something I would enjoy and I plan on giving them a good try.

If they lack play testing, editing and proof reading it wasn't apparent from the above. However, time will tell.

Based on an earlier announcement about 'Honours' on TMP I looked up Keith Flint;s blog and ploughed through a lot of the SYW post (and a lot of the other stuff) and liked what I read – based on that I pre-ordered the rules.

I had also previously pre-ordered World Aflame wayback and have to say I was disappointed when it turned up. Skirmish masquerading as battalion level. On the other hand I very much doubt that will be the case with Honours of War which have been extensively tested and re-written in the light of that experience. I can quite honestly say that I am looking forward to Honours of War being published in later this month.

Would you sooner have a Minden Campaign Osprey written by any old bumpkin or one by someone who has a passion and feeling for the campaign? I fear over the years I have bought too many Osprey books of one kind or another written by people going through the motions. I would prefer to 'make do' with either Savory and Macksey than have yet another mediocre Osprey written by a booby cluttering the shelves. There is far too much variability in the quality of Osprey's products for me to be too excised by their lack of output for the SYW especially when Christopher Duffy's books are readily available.

Snowcat27 Nov 2015 3:10 p.m. PST

Just ordered mine from Book Depository: AU$20 with free shipping. Looking forward to it.

Ottoathome27 Nov 2015 3:14 p.m. PST

Yawn

mashrewba28 Nov 2015 2:07 a.m. PST

Well ok yes yawn but don't forget we are grown up people who play with toy soldiers and get excited about it. Everyone I know thinks it's quite sweet.

Snowcat28 Nov 2015 3:27 a.m. PST

Dear Otto. Mr Dickens just called. Said he'd like his character back, if it's not too much trouble.
