Books from that publisher are of dubious authenticity.

That's the second time you've made that allegation with no follow up or explanation (or support). It's starting to sound like a pet peeve and that it us your opinion that is suspect. . .

Cornelius01 Nov 2015 2:12 a.m. PST

What evidence is there that the author is suspect?

ArmymenRGreat01 Nov 2015 5:38 a.m. PST

4.5 stars with 719 reviews. Don't know if it's dubious or not, but it's apparently a good read at least. Thanks for the link.

It's a good read, written as a series of interviews, The interviewees memories are either somewhat muddled time wise, and they have telescoped several weeks into a day, or there is a lot of fiction in the stories.
There were no SS anywhere near the U S beaches on D day.

From reading the reviews, it seems to be total BS.

I do know that many years ago (1963)"Invasion! Theyre Coming!: The German Account of the D-Day Landings and the 80 Days Battle for France (Schiffer Military History) (Schiffer Military/Aviation History)" was published. Author was Paul Carell, a pseudonym for (SS Lt.Col.)Paul Karl Schmidt, who after the war has written a number of history books (proving that also members of a criminal organization still can write good history).

i own all of carell's books. whats your beef with him?

jgibbons01 Nov 2015 6:43 p.m. PST

I don't know with regard to the authenticity and i have seen the discussions about that publisher…

But it was actually still an interesting read – and its certainly not expensive to try…

I have a book by Paul Carell in German titled "Der Russlandkrieg, Fotografiert von Soldaten" published in 1967.
It is 434 pages of black and white and color photographs and 16 pages of division insignia, where recruited, regimental numbers including artillery regiment. There are long captions for many of the pictures but difficult to translate using a German/English dictionary. If Carell was a Waffen SS officer he was still quite capable of producing a well balanced and vivid picture history of the war on the Russian Front. I had other books he had written but found they did not translate well into English so over the years they went by the wayside. I think he was ill-served by his US publisher when it came to translation.
