Hi,

In this thread:
TMP link

The following comment was made (by "WFGamers"):
"A member of our gaming group has a supplement/second edition of the Twilight of the Sun King rules on the way. It is considerably more detailed than the first edition with more specific rules for the wars of 1680-1720. There are more detailed rules for pikes for the early period, the Eastern wars, the Great Northern War and generally. Also some sample OOB's – 1 from the NYW, 1 from the GNW, 2 from the WSS and 1 from the Ottoman wars. I think they will be published within a few months."

I just ordered version 1.1 from the Pike & Shot Society, and am very curious about a possible expanded edition. Did anything ever come of it?

Cheers,

Christopher

Hope they fixed the pages out of order glitch. Mind, I really like the rules, so much I started the Yahoo group.

I understand that the Pike and Shot Society will publish the updated edition which is in hand I am told. There is even talk of a scenario booklet.

vtasagames – you must have struck unlucky as the copy that I have if fine all pages present and in the right order! Why not contact the Pike & Shot soc and see if they will replace your obviously defective copy?

@Thomas-
vtsaogames wasn't especially unlucky, P&SS sent out a lot of the mixed up pages copies. MY FLGS still has two copies sitting on their shelves.

Well that's good news! Make sure to keep us updated somehow. I'm in the "advanced planning stage" for getting back/into the WSS, probably next Autumn, so there is time.

A scenario book would be great – and something of a first for the period?

Cheers,

Christopher

PS – the copy of 1.1 I just received has the pages (all 6!) in the proper order.

this would be great. it's a really great, clean set of rules, but sparse with any supplemental info on a period that is mostly poorly served.

WFGamers01 Nov 2015 3:58 a.m. PST

Hi Christopher and all,

In theory the updated version of these rules and 2 scenario booklets should have been out by now. Unfortunately this has been delayed by personal problems of one of the other people involved.

As previously mentioned it is a lot more focused on the period and also hopefully has sorted out some glitches, not just in the page order. There will be 2 scenario booklets and also possibly more later or online or something. One scenario book will feature 10 Western battles -

The War of the Grand Alliance (1688-1697)
Fleurus, 1st July 1690
Boyne, 11th July 1690
Landen/Neerwinden, 29th July 1693
Marsaglia, 4th October 1693

The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714)
Luzzara, 15th August 1702
Speyerbach, 15th November 1703
Blenheim, 13th August 1704
Ramillies, 23rd May 1706
Almanza, 25th April 1707
Almenar, 27th July 1710

The other will have 10 Eastern battles – the GNW and Ottoman wars. The exact battles haven't been decided yet but probably 3 or 4 Ottoman battles and the rest from the GNW.

These are basically ready to go but without maps, or at least without just sketch maps. Hopefully these can be done soon and publication will be soon after that. But this will have to wait until the personal issues are resolved.

Can anyone give me some hints regarding unit sizes and basing for these rules?

CATenWolde01 Nov 2015 8:42 a.m. PST

The rules are set at a very high level. A "brigade" of 2000 foot or 1000 horse is represented by two 40x20mm bases. The ground scale is set at 1cm = 100 paces (75 yards).

One of things I'm actually wondering is whether people have nudged the basing to take into the 3-4-5 rank variations amongst the different armies.

vtsaogames01 Nov 2015 10:33 a.m. PST

I use 1 inch wide bases, 4 to a brigade with a small adjustment to distances.

Games with 20 to 30,000 per side resolve in 2 hours or less.

WFGamers01 Nov 2015 12:01 p.m. PST

We have basically kept with the same scale but changed all distances to 'Base Width' and you choose what that is. So all ranges, movement distances, etc, are now in Base Width's.

I would imagine most people will use something like 40 to 60mm as a base width. This means you need a table 6 foot wide for 40mm bases and 8 foot for 60mm bases to do Blenheim.

There is provision to reflect the number of ranks in use if you think this is important, we don't. A brigade can be 'Small' or 'Large' and one of the uses of this is too reflect this idea.

Martin Rapier01 Nov 2015 12:32 p.m. PST

I use 30x15 bases with 2mm stuff. Two rank blocks, for Dutch, British etc and 3 rank blocks for those primitive Frenchies.

daler240D02 Nov 2015 5:51 a.m. PST

Agree with what WFGamers says. Use basewidths.
