Writing in Proceedings magazine, Jeremy Thompson argues that the U.N. should take a leading role in disputed Asian waters:

A United Nations-led maritime task force could be the way forward for maritime peacekeeping in the contentious South China and East China Seas

Do you agree?

zippyfusenet31 Oct 2015 3:15 p.m. PST

Um. Isn't the Peoples' Republic of China one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council? And don't they have at least as many friends on the Security Council and in the General Assembly as we do?

The day is past when the US could use the UN as a fig leaf to cover our foreign policy. These days if we want something done, we have to mobilize an alliance of our own, and provide most of the muscle.

I have no faith in the UN's ability to do anything, other than siphon off money from people's pockets, in order to line the ones of their representatives and agents.

Wargamer Blue31 Oct 2015 6:03 p.m. PST

UN is a joke.

FoxtrotPapaRomeo31 Oct 2015 9:46 p.m. PST

UN isn't a joke but it doesn't work when Russia and China are offside. A multilateral taskforce, including all the other claimants to the area, is all that can be hoped for ….

I agree with W.B..

The countries that care what the UN thinks aren't the ones causing trouble. The ones causing trouble will simply ignore what the UN says or veto any resolution discussed.

"Do I agree" ?

Whether I agree or not is irrellevent. This isn't a site for the discussion of opinions on news. Apparently that sort of this is reserved for the 'Blue Fez'. This site is allegedly about wargaming. So isn't the question…

"how would you go about wargaming the situation" ?

15mm and 28mm Fanatik02 Nov 2015 9:26 a.m. PST

The chinese do not recognize UNCLOS so there's no reason they will abide by any UN arbitrarion. Besides, the UN lacks enforcement power.

Jemima Fawr02 Nov 2015 9:43 a.m. PST

China is a full signatory to UNCLOS. Like Spain, it just chooses to ignore the bits it doesn't like. :)

Zardoz02 Nov 2015 10:18 a.m. PST

Ah yes, lots of talk about politics and nothing about wargaming. Forum rules ???? Nah, why bother, even the editor is DH baiting these days.

China's deployed some armed J-11s to their northern, man-made, SCS island, and the USN has sent the USS Lassen within 12 nautical miles of one of their islands, so the wargaming scenarios can begin.

You can be the professional wargamers on both sides will be doing a lot of that.

Let's see.

1/600th scale jets, with 1/1200th – 1/2400th scale vessels, and "man-made" islands custom built to fit the size of your table area. Those beautiful Sukhoi, J-11s will look wonderful on the tabletop.

Don't forget to buy lots of "coast guard" and PLA-N "merchant fishing vessels" to present a significant "navigational hazard" for the US vessels. For the American player(s), you only need an escort, or two.

I'd go with Bulldogs Away, or Shipwreck rules for the naval side of things, and Air War:C21 for the jets.
