Thought that this might be of some interest to all. Many of us figured this out years ago, but apparently it's now been "officially discovered". grin

Well it is about time, isnīt it? My favorite sentence from the article:

"Before Photoshop became all the rage, photographers even in the 18th century developed techniques to make a photo montage."

Yes, those 18th century photographers were certainly a clever bunch! grin

Actually, Texas Jack… the ACW was in the 19th Century.

Also, the paragraph 'To understand how the image was created, you have to start with the notation "Copyright 1902 by L.C. Handy."' suggests that the fakery took place in the early 20th Century…

+1 for Texas Jack

The 18th century – when photography was all the rage!

It's a little known fact that Benjamin Franklin was a crackerjack photoshopper.

He would very likely have been exposed in some scandalous selfies

It looks about as convincing as the Red Dwarf "digitally enhanced" episodes some years ago

Of course "faked" implies he was trying to pass it off as something it was not.

The photo was being posted on TMP when the bug struck. It was more frequent in 1902.

GarrisonMiniatures: I'm sure Texas Jack knows precisely which century the Civil War was in, and pointed out that sentence because of the obvious error.

My favorite portrait of grant is still the one on the $50 USD bill. I just can't get enough of them!

The people on the talk show panel are absolutely hilarious. They are acting like they're some sort of history detectives with Masters degrees discovering some huge secret of history. Most high school students wouldn't even know what war or what general they were looking at, never mind knowing it's a fake photo.

Any one who has read even a moderate amount of Civil War will have seen that photo numerous times with Grant not in it. And at any rate, just looking at it for five seconds, your eye can catch that he doesn't match the scene, the lighting, angle he's positioned, I mean c'mon!

This topic reminds of this little gem that came up a few years ago. Supposedly a photo of a volunteer unit of women who fought in the Civil War. Gotta love it. This is on a feminist site that still has it posted as being Civil War. Ironically, they asked on the site if any buffs out there could tell them more about the photo…lol…

So I did. Told them that unfortunately the photo was from the 1870s or 1880s(weapons, clothing, and gear prove it – officer's cap insignia is post-war, the rifles are breechloading, look maybe like 1873 Springfields or something close to it, also post-war), and was NOT a Civil War unit whatsoever. They promptly called me a liar and a sexist and said that I didn't want to admit women fought in the war! Gotta love it.
