Hi Scott, did the 5.5 use charge bags and primer like the M198? Nice looking game. |

Thanks for your kind comments all. Yes the cases scattered on the right represent empty cases, the ones on the left in the cradles are ready use….

Hi Mate Sorry to be the 'rain on the parade' but 5.5 and 4.5 inch Guns fired Seprate Loading ammunition. No cart cases. Charge bags were used as the propellant. The Breech provided the rearward obturation so no cartridge case required The only brass you'd find on a 5.5 inch Gun position would be the .303 primers Only the projectile would be sitting in the Loading Tray. Two gunners would place the loading tray on the cradle and move the projectile to the open breech and then together with the detachment commander would ram the projectile 'home'. The appropriate charge bag(s) would then be loaded behind the projectile. Breech would then be closed and a primer inserted into the firing lock. Lanyard pulled Boom! Breech opened and primer automatically ejected. Repeat! Now I feel like a button counter,… |

Yep Exactly the same 'Seprate Loading' system of Projectile, Charge Bags, Primer. I served on 5.5 inch Guns from 1983 to 1985. To this day the best artillery piece I ever worked on. Brilliant gun way ahead of its time |

Great looking game, Sparker, thanks for posting. I'm a big fan of the very clean look your tables have. V/R, Jack |

I have to say trailape is right, the 5.5 was a separate charge bag and projectile. Just found that photo ( Two gunners standing with projectile and bag ) It is a charge bag not a case….sorry Canadian Army soldiers, Gunner Gerry Smith (right) and Lance-Bombardier Bert Coughtry (left), of the 5th Medium Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, pose with a message to the Japanese on the barrel of their BL 5.5 inch Medium Gun following the German surrender to Allied forces in the Netherlands. What did you make your hedgerows out of? I love them. |

Bought them off a mate – but they are essentially carved out of 'Scotchbrite' cleaning scourers – you know the kind of cleaning pads its illegal to clean your rifle's gas plug with because its too effective! |
