Burgoyne's force (or was it just the Hesse Hanau artillery?) took as artillery French tubes captured in 1759 mounted on British carriages. Does anyone make this rather obscure artillery? Let's face it. I put artillery on the table, and "they are what I say they are", If they LOOK small, they are 3 pdes. A little bigger, they are 6 pdrs. And if such a set were available, I would buy it, but nobody would know the difference but me. So, really they would be a vanity purchase. We all do that, don't we? |

In 25/28mm of course. |

Get some French guns and some British guns and swap barrels. The 'Saratoga' guns you use ONLY for the Saratoga campaign games you play (to do otherwise would be wrong) ; the others you use in other games and point to as before… |

I think it's only the Hesse Hanau company that had these. My guess is that the French barrels would be more elaborately decorated with crests, monograms, handles in the shape of sea creatures, etc. See if Front Rank will sell you either the 3-pdr [EQ1] or Galloper [EQ13] barrels separately, or with a British AWI carriage. Failing that, have you looked at the 3-pdr "Grasshopper" gun in the Foundry Continental Army range? |

The French tubes would be, of course, 4-pdrs. Next question – Valliere or Gribauval? |

They could be 6lb Gribauval and not capture gun barrels. Gribauval, I found out also made artillery for other nations that was not adopted by the French army. |

BTW, most of Burgoyne's artillery was British patterns, including two light 24-pdrs (dragging THOSE through the woods must have been fun). I have read (can't remember where) that the Brunswickers had British pattern light 6-pdrs. You can see a fair number of his tubes in the artillery line-up at West Point. |

At least we can get crews with the correct uniforms now in 15/18mm, thanks to Blue Moon. |

The French tubes would be, of course, 4-pdrs. Next question – Valliere or Gribauval? True, but Front Rank guns tend to be bigger than everyone else's so you need to go a size down, so to speak. Anything sent out to New France in the 1750s would have been Valliere, I would think. |

I was afraid that I would have to buy two different guns and switch carriages. I guess I am right. But how many guns did Hesse Hanau have? Not all that many I presume. I've splurged more than that for stuff in a battle that I will never use again. |

From memory, there was a pair of guns each with the grenadiers and the Light Battalion von Barner, and four with Pausch himself. I'm not sure if the German line units had battalion guns for the Saratoga campaign. |

Perry has guns with Saratoga crews….not that knowledgeable myself to tell the difference, so not sure if the guns are different. just ordered a howitzer. |
