The Baccus6mm site has a lot of uniform guides. link It would be good to know how detailed of a rules set you want to play. For books, I'd recommend Chandler. A little dry but it is pretty complete. link As well, Editions Brokaw has a bunch of pamphlets on the Age of Marlborough. Given the unfortunate passing of Pat Condrey, I am uncertain where you would pick them up these days. Finally, there is the Ospreys. A list here gleaned from their forum. link John |

Its a great period, but.. most of the big battles are big battles, and most have nearly as many units of horse/dragoons as infantry. Uniforms are easier to paint than Napoleonic ones, and most of the French troops are grey. (its all the facing colours that make the difference |

The mish mash of what passes for 'uniforms' in this period is what put me off for thirty years. In the end I did it in 2mm, so just the flags to worry about. It is much easier to paint a horde of 2mm cavalry too:) I've used them with Twilight of the Sun King, Horse, Foot & Guns, various Neil Thomas rules and my own concoction of Lost Battles adapted for the WSS. All are OK for big battles, we've done Ramilles, Blenheim etc |

@Queen Catherine What country are you in? I may have Wargames Factory WSS boxes as well as loose sprues and a completed unit or two to dispose of. Jim |

Rules Black powder, it's fast and easy. Or Beneath the lille banners. Much more focused on this period! give great period feel. Both cost money, but I think they would be very good options, and both have lots of pictures for inspiration. |

I love this period, but all the Cav. to paint (one third of an army) was just too daunting. I think a smaller scale like 10mm is the way to go. Good luck! |

Daunting?
Wargames Factory plastics for the most part. |
ironicon | 30 Oct 2015 12:30 p.m. PST |
WOW! Daunting for me anyway. |

We have been using Blenheim 2004 for quite a few years now and have been very happy with them. The rules are available for free ( warflag.com/blenheim2004 ). There is much information available there and also a Project WSS ( link ) is just starting now and you can access it for a small subscription fee. |

CS Grant's uniform guides are terrific.you could probably get them and various booklets by Sapherson, etc from On Military Matters. The Pike and Shot Society has marvellous books, but they aren't cheap. For rules, we use Might and Reason with the WSS module available on the Honour website. The rules are based on brigades. Bear in mind that Marlborough's battles were large affairs. By all means go with 28mm if that's what you want to do, but you will be painting a lot if them. We use 6mm Baccus. It is a great period. Enjoy. |

The Blenheim 2004 rules are free, and the excellent Twilight of the Sun King are a total of 3GBP! It looks like you ar focused on 28mm, but if not, then the Pendraken 10mm line is an excellent option. You don't *have* to put 24 figures on each base … ;) Cheers, Christopher |

If you can pick up a copy at a reasonable price, Churchill's biography of. Marlborough is well worth reading. Too much on the politics of the period and he is an apologist for his ancestor, but there is a lot of information on the campaigns on the Rhine and in Italy that is hard to come by in English. Plus, his prose is a joy to read. |

You don't *have* to put 24 figures on each base … ;) No, you could have 36 man units (6x6)! theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link Pendraken are 30 for £4.50 GBP. 1 Pack command, 5 packets muskets- enough for 6 units like this, £22.50 GBP I've got 18 units of foot, but usually 12 is more than enough. |

Oh, and I've got painting guides for French and Prussians. They were done for me and my mate, but they should be easy to decipher. My Gmail Address is Last.Hussar |

I too have been recently drawn into this period by the 28mm plastics. I have games Napoleonics for decades but the figures are what pulled me in. I found a great book from the 19th century on the French army, the armies of Louis XVI but still not sure which theater to do Neatherlands, Italy or Spain. Does anyone know if the French regiments move from theater to theater or did they stay in one area? Has anyone run into specific orders of battle or do people just use generic units? Thanks |
Last Hussar | 01 Nov 2015 3:33 a.m. PST |
I've emailed you a load of stuff for Prussians, and something for the French. I don't know if the scaling stayed right when I converted them to PDFs but the flags were the right size for 10mm. Mine are on 6 bases per regiment, so I put the regimental flag on base 3 (left centre) and the Kings flag on base 4 (right centre). My opponent hasn't done the Kings standard on many of his French, as he refuses to have a white cross on a white background! |

Can't get much cheaper than free. Here is the original 2001 rules version of Twilight of the Sun King: link |
