Stumbled upon this PDF "Rethinking the Basis of Infantry Close Combat" ( PDF link ). Famed Aussie LtCol David Kilcullen discusses running some very controlled training iterations in the UK, as well as real-world experience in Timor and other historical examples. He reinforces what is taught at the Infantry Officers Course: "Suppression is the key infantry task." If you don't "win the firefight" via overwhelming suppression your assault/maneuver element is unlikely to succeed without prohibitive casualties. But if you can break the enemy with accurate and heavy fires, even a small assault element can achieve overwhelming results. Should be an especially interesting read for game designers of reinforced platoon up to battalion-level games: might need to tweak some mechanics about suppression and force ratios or something. |

quite fascinating! Gotta admit that Infinity combat really seems to follow that idea. Win the firefight to be able to move. |
