I've been working on artillery for a bit now and am wondering what color to paint loose ammo chests. A few of the cannons have loose ammo chests that were offloaded before commencing firing.
Were they all made of wood?
Is that a metal lid on top?
And is natural wood okay?

Same colour (or none) as the carriage, usually.

I would have thought they were all wood, to keep the potential for sparks to a minimum.

What SM said. The ready boxes were painted to protect the wood. The tops were generally covered in canvas, likely painted to waterproof it. The canvas was likely tacked down by a strip of copper, which does not create sparks.
