Gearing up to hit the road from West Coast LA to Gulf Coast LA next week, bringing my Second Afghan War Battle of Charasiab game to the Colonial Barracks V convention in Metarie, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans, where 100 or so generally good-natured Colonial and 19th Century gamers will gather for their annual tribute to the illustrious Larry V. Brom, author of "The Sword And The Flame" and various other rules sets. Final preparations include creation of some custom 800 Fighting Englishmen/The Sword And The Flame game cards and a set of Quick Reference Sheets tailored to each individual player's command. Two nights ago I was lucky to be joined by a couple of friends who helped me get in a little more play-testing, which as it always does, yielded some valuable lessons. If interested in reading more and seeing 100+ pics of the recent play-test, please click on the LINK below… link Meantime, here's some teaser pics:

I was lucky enough to play in this. DA THB expresses my feelings perfectly. It's every colonial gamer's dream come true. Add to the above that Guru is the consummate host, and that's all there is to say. |

Guru, your Afghan stuff is so absurdly good … it's dizzying. |

Doesn't get any better than this! Triple A+ |

Thanks very much for the kind words and high compliments, D A THB, Oranjzicht, benglish, and Big Red. Daryl… you are too kind, my friend! Have to say one of if not the biggest highlight from my entire multi-year "building the Charasiab scenario" experience is getting to meet and game with you. Now I'm looking forward to Colonial Barracks, playing in some other games and running this one with 9 players -- 3 British and 6 Afghan -- at the con, or less, as I think it could also work well with just 2 British and 3 or 4 Afghans. |

Well done Sir would love to partake in such a game. |

There is a fine line between madness and genius. You Sir, are firmly on the genius side of the divide. |

As it appears that Sergeant Brom himself will not be able to make an appearance this year (and I hope I'm dead wrong on that), it's particularly disappointing given what he may miss. I know The Grim is his favorite theater, and seeing the combination of game, miniatures, and--finally!--TERRAIN so beautifully blended would do his old Marine's heart good. "Hals und Bein bruch!" Thanks very much, ARMY Strong, I'd love to have you partake as well! @Rich Bliss: Hah-Hah!!! That's my laugh of pure joy! I'd be happy to have that carved atop my final resting place -- not that I plan on resting there any time soon. I shared your comment with my family, and my 15 year-old Daughter took great exception to your opinion, declaring I am actually "Right on the line!" between the two… but that goes with the territory of being a teenage daughter. @TVAG: I hear you, Patrick. Let's keep hoping Larry manages to visit, but if he can't, you and I and all his fellow gamers, friends and fans know Lori and Christy will be sharing lots of pictures with him, and -- if it manafes to arrive at my home before I have to hit the road -- passing along a "Battle of Charasiab" souvenir I've got coming with his name on it. And thank you for the well-wishes! |

Thanks, Greek Geek & Flying Glove! Just hit the road for New Orleans, only about 1,900 miles left! |

Sleeping just East of Phoenix tonight. Hopefully tomorrow's drive will get me to San Antonio. |

About to go to sleep in my San Antonio motel room on the way back home from New Orleans. As already posted about by good friend and fellow long-time Larry Brom admirer, Jeff Baumal (aka: Sgt. Guiness), due to its coincidental timing, Colonial Barracks V went from being a wargame convention celebrating Larry Brom's rules, to being a combination wargaming convention and memorial/tribute celebrating his life, which had sadly ended just a few days earlier. I believe Larry would have enjoyed hearing all the cheers, groans, cries of defeat, and roars of victory which -- thanks to his various rules sets -- filled a hotel ballroom in Metarie, Louisiana this past weekend. Probably even more than that, he would have enjoyed hearing all the laughter and good-natured trash-talk, and seeing the generosity of spirit on display by all the players and game-masters alike. I have a lot more to post about from the con -- the Charasiab game, which was truly epic in size AND LENGTH… and an idea hatched by a few of us at the con for a Larry Brom memorial event in 2016… but it will all have to wait, since I really need to sleep before crossing the "Dead Zone" that is the I-10 Highway between San Antonio and El Paso tomorrow… …except for this one pic, which I think Larry would have appreciated, showing British Cavalry -- courtesy of my kind and extremely generous friend, Michael "Reggie" Davis -- attempting to do an end-run around the Conical Hill right in front of the Sang-i-Nawishta Gorge objective point.

Mad Guru, What a game! Fantastic layout and beautifully painted figures. Loved the whole thing. Great job, my friend! Looking forward to seeing more photos and reading more stories. Thanks for being such a patient, fair, and genial host.>>Tim Chadwick PS We are now safely home in N. Carolina. Hope your trip is an uneventful (if LONG) one. Take care. |

Thanks very much, Tim, my friend, that's very kind of you to say! Glad your trip home went smoothly, as mine has so far. I just settled into Tucson and should be home by a decent hour tomorrow night, depending on the LA traffic at home. I had a close call with what looked like a coyote pup while doing about 80mph on I-10, but luckily for us both he or she turned and scrambled back off the road before I had to swerve out of the way. Hope we get to play a game together again some day -- maybe even this Summer! |
