I'm in the process of painting some classic RTB01 beakie marines and thought it would be fun to read some 40k novels. The only one I ever read was First and Only (the first Gaunt's Ghosts book) back when I was a teenager.

So, what 40k novels are worth reading, and which are worth avoiding?

Storm of Iron was pretty good if you like Iron Warriors. Most of the Horus Heresy line is also pretty good, if you stick with Abnett's stuff, most of McNeils, etc. Anything by Dembski-Bowden gets high ranks, especially his Night Lords series…

Damon.

cloudcaptain26 Oct 2015 2:34 p.m. PST

Anything by Dan Abnett.

Agreed. Anything by Abnett and Dembski-Bowden .

WarpSpeed26 Oct 2015 2:46 p.m. PST

Anything by Dan Abnett or Sandy Mitchell.

Garro series is good but is a auto series

Stay away from Gav Thorpe. Besides Dan Abnett, Ben Counter is quite good. Bill King's Space Wolf series is a good romp.

I have read most of the Gaunt's Ghosts books and they are all excellent.

Abnett, all the way. His Eisenhorn trilogy is superb, IMO.

The first three "Trilogy" books of the Horus Heresy are quite good, even though you really need to toss Eisenstein into the mix to round it out.

The Commisar Cain books are a fun read too.

Stay away from anything written by Gav Thorpe. He is a hack.

Another vote for the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell – they are a hoot

Also anything by Dan Abnett – he writes a lot of non-40K sci-fi too

Platybeladon30 Oct 2015 8:06 a.m. PST

Can only reiterate as stated above many times:
Ciaphas Cain books are well written & funny – nice to have a "normal" point-of-view (i.e. somebody who's human and simply wants to survive the fight) as opposed to the xenophobic-religous tirade of the space marine.
Dan Abnett – doesn't matter what it's all good

Avoid them all as none a particularly good. IMHO Your mileage may vary but find most 40 K fluff books to be rubbish. I suppose my own imaginings always seem better to me.
