As I get back into SFB with miniatures, I am curious if there might be a particularly good way to store them, and I'm guessing that basing may impact the storage method. So, how do you do base and store them?

Thanks,

irishserb

I drill holes in the bottoms of my ships, and mount them on nails driven through wooden discs that are glued to fender washers: link

For massive ships I use multiple bases: link

Magnetic sheeting keeps them in place: link

I'm struggling with this too. I like the Corsec bases but they don't work for smaller/irregularly shaped ships (you have to drill a 3/16" hole in the bottom). At the moment I glue a super-magnet to the bottom.

For storage, I just put each one in a heavy duty zip-bag and put them in a box, one box per fleet.

I do not play SFB though I use some of the miniatures in other game settings. Most of my starships have a small magnet on the bottom and there is a corresponding magnet on the stands. This way the ships sit flat in a box with foam inserts.

I am thinking of changing my system. If I replace the magnet on the ship with a flat head nail the ship should still stick adequately to the stand and the nail will stick to the foam keeping the movement of the ship in its storage box to a minimum. System is also cheaper since nails cost a lot less than magnets.

I take these:

snip off the nub at the tip, and glue a 2mm rare earth magnet disc onto the stump with two-part epoxy.

Once the epoxy has dried, I place another magnet on the first magnet, put a bit of epoxy on the top of that magnet, and then place my starship on top of that (you want to do a dry fit to find the centre of gravity of your ship and maybe countersink a hole on the ship if required).

The stands can go into a separate box. The ships I just get a piece of 2" thick foam out of a cheap mattress or seat cushion and cut the correct sized and shape holes in them, and then place the foam into a sturdy cardboard box. If your box is deep enough you can stack the foam i layers.

I use pistol cases from someplace like Academy. They fit nicely with base attached in the foam scallops.

I'm kind of digging Ravenstar Studios bases. But those are really just sturdy wire and a resin hex. DesetScrb's idea is just as good.

From past experience, plastic flying bases will always break unless it's a plastic kit that fits it fine without gluing.

Balsa wood base 9painted black) with a nail attached to the bottom of the ship. I do have some large ships.

Pizza boxes and bubble wrap.

Works fine until you need to refresh the bubble wrap.

(Though I should note that I'm apparently much gentler on my models than most other people I know. So I don't really know if that's because my boxing is better, or whether I'm more careful.)

The bases are generally plastic bases, super-glued to the model. I've got some magnets, but they're not very useful in-game. Ships spin too easily, or get knocked off the bases.

Litko clear hexes for full thrust. They also have plastic rings to glue to the ship.
