In competition play, do you tend to stick with the same army all season, or do you field different armies at different times?

Swampster25 Oct 2015 2:36 a.m. PST

The competitions I play in tend to have a theme or a date so different armies tend to be used. I will use an army a few times if I can but that is often because I have recently painted the army and want to make the most of it.

Even so, in about 50 competitions, most of my armies have been used no more than 4 times and many only once or twice.

What's a season?

Season? Sounds a bit rigid to me….

I have a short attention span so I try lots of armies.

Only play FoG:R competitively, and UK tournaments tend to be Euro-centric in theme (Late Mediaeval/Italian Wars, Tudor/Late 16th, TYW, ECW, and LoA/Siege of Vienna), with the occasional "open" event (mainly 25mm).

There are two or three UK-based "team" events, where groups of three players each have to bring a different chronological or themed army. Often these will have one European pool, and two "exotic" themes, such as "Takeaway" (Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, etc), "Elephants", "Pirates", or "Gold and Jewels" (Africa and Central/South America).

I don't know whether organisers liaise on theme/period in order to make building a new army worthwhile, but you can sometimes feel that you are always finishing off "last year's army".

I haven't done that kind of gaming in a while. When I did, I would generally stick to one army during a rules cycle. (So a period of years.) I'd find the one that meshed with my play style, and then refined it to be successful.

Granted, these were company games (like 40K), as opposed to historicals. I've never played historicals in tournament-style play, so flit between armies depending on the scenario.

What is a "rules cycle"?

Cerdic28 Oct 2015 2:53 p.m. PST

Some sort of lengthy German opera perhaps, MajorB?

What is a "rules cycle"?

The lifetime of an edition of the rules. So WHFB7 was one cycle.

It's not a fixed measure, because faction books might change a balance.
