"For the Upcoming Kickstarter Age of Tyrants the Overlord John Robertson has sent me two pre-production miniatures for the Viridian and Junker forces. Incidentally also the armies I want to start.

The tanks are manufactured by Prodos Games and come in 6mm scale resin casts. I received flawless castings with the only quibble being the two resin addons for the Viridian tank (sat dish and light). John is already looking into options for this. Personally I have put in the sat dish as a communication symbol but will leave out the light for now…"

If he doesn't want it linked, why put it on the internet? color me confused

sebigboss7925 Oct 2015 9:43 a.m. PST

Maybe because using someone elses work, whether from the internet or not, is frowned upon in some, civilised parts of the planet?

The least that could be done is ask: Yo dude, nice pics, mind if I use them for X. My personal experience is creators usually apreciate the application of manners but get really ape in their absence. Bill and Armand have been made aware of this before so why start again? The copyright is claimed effective October 2013 so… colour me confused.

I will not even attempt to pose the question what you would do if someone poses your creation as their own or maybe that is OK with you. As manners and culture vary there are people with the same right to an opinion as you that see the matter entirely different.

Not to mention the "interesting" legal opinions some users had just recently in a discussion. If nothing at all, using someone's work as your own, without proper credits is not the deed of a gentleman – to say the very least.

Dear Confused (Sabre6)

After following the link and reading the about page it is clear (to me) that the "blog" is an e-zine product review site so Roland probably regards the content as his "work". No doubt many politico, info and other media bloggers think the same, as would the Washington Post and the UK Times. Should they be pulled off of the internet?

I imagine Roland would probably like to be asked if his "work" can be used.

Anyhow, nice vehicles very crisp but not really interested in sci-fi.

Dear Sabre6
Linking (so you can be taken directly to the other site) is one thing, putting the copyright pictures and words on to another site (TMP) without consent is another.

Still confused as if you don't want it seen why put it on the net? I would not had any visibility of the product.

I think Tango needs to chill and respect other folk's (virtual) space. The failure mode of clever is Bleeped texth0l3.

The pictures have been removed. The quoted text is allowable by copyright laws, as it is a small excerpt.

Folks with curiosity regarding Fair Use and Copyright could check out UNH's review article. It's interesting.

Dear Bill

as there are no credits: No, it is not allowed.

By not referencing properly Tango01 peddles this content as his own which is infringement. For the removal of the pictures I give you credit but it would be advisable to give proper credit where other people have put in their work.

In simple words you are making money with other peoples' work. As the owner of this site this is your responsibility and we spoke about this matter before.

Should you be interested in an arrangement concerning this matter, you have my contact deatils.

Kind Regards

As for your confusion Saber6 see the comments above. If still confused, cannot be fixed.

By not referencing properly Tango01 peddles this content as his own which is infringement.

He has put the text in quotes, which clearly means it is not his own text – he is quoting.

It seems impossible to name the author, as your blog is anonymous… though I infer your first name is Roland? grin

sebigboss7925 Oct 2015 2:12 p.m. PST

Dear Bill

I am afraid, that is not proper referencing. Again, we can handle this in a number of ways but I see no reason why we cannot handle it as gentleman. I will email you in a moment with details.

Kind Regards

Edit: Ninjaed me. I will add my suggestions to the PM inbound. I seem to have misplaced your email Address.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian25 Oct 2015 2:14 p.m. PST

Armand, I do not think the owner of this blog, wants it linked to TMP.

Kyote, I am afraid that free speech allows people to discuss what is posted on the internet. There is no law against posting links, nor is permssion required.

I have added the credits you desire to the original post.

sebigboss7925 Oct 2015 2:42 p.m. PST

Thanks Bill

I PMed you again. Let us handle the rest via email or PM. I will update on my side as well.

Tango knows all about it. This has come up before.

Cergorach27 Oct 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

Giving an authors name isn't requirement of Fairuse, just an implementation. Wouldn't a direct link to the article suffice on the internet for 'fairness'? Images aren't excluded under fair use. But that's a legal matter…

What I don't get is that it's free clicks for the author, free traffic to their site, what more do you want?

sebigboss7927 Oct 2015 4:50 p.m. PST

If you are seriously offering to work for free, I know lots of people with plenty of work to be done.

If you still do not get it, I am really sorry. Principles of capitalism and plain courtesy don't always stick, I suppose. I have suggested a modus operandi that benefits all but Bill does not seem to be interested.

Cergorach28 Oct 2015 7:07 a.m. PST

sebigboss79 I'm not offering anything. But I've done lots of stuff for free on the internet, most gamers online probably have.

*laughs at Principles of capitalism*
How people on the internet make money:
Advertisement => impressions/clicks => More viewers/clickers means more money. A link on a forum with a small part of a 'review' (including an image or two) would generally incentivize people to click on the link and read the whole article. That would mean more money for the one running the adds on the site.

If it's not about ads, it's about 'internet fame', the same idea applies, more people reading the rest of the article, the more people know about you.

More people know about you alright, but not in a positive sense, when you come across as an megalomaniac <deleted for the kids sensitivities>. Not only here, but also in the actual article. You not only hurt yourself, but also the KS your trying to promote (John Robertson should look for other promoters/previewers).

Normally I would bookmark such a (preview/review) site to keep me updated about the new stuff for Age of Tyrants and the upcoming KS. That article now is about your tiff with TMP and Tang01 instead about cool new minis, what it's supposed to be about.

How exactly do you think that folks get to your site? Sites like these, or Tabletop Fix, or Tabletop Gaming news. You know how other folks find your site? By folks posting it on 'their home' forums, because a lot of folks never go to those news sites. Folks don't go to your site when I post "Go there:" with a link, just not going to happen. The amount of stuff I didn't know about and found out through TMP, other hobby forums I visit and the news sites is staggering. As for Kickstarters, I would still be in possession of a lot more of my money if they didn't show stuff from other sites (My wallet hates them, my hobby loves them). If such sites only showed the press releases it would be horribly uninformative and most folks would stop going to such news sites.

As for 'plain courtesy', you do understand that this is the internet and not the doctors office where you ask in a friendly manner "Are you done with that paper, can I read it please?". Contact is slow, slows down people and people will be able to post less or not at all if forced to do ask permission first. That's why you can do a lot with Fair use.

Forcing your idea of 'plain courtesy' on others is how wars are started, even if they are limited to 'internet flame wars' it hurts the one that started it more then the rest involved.

But-but-but… It's the principle of the thing! Forcing your principles on others is how… Well, you know what I mean ;-)

sebigboss7928 Oct 2015 7:56 a.m. PST

Correct, you do not grant others what you demand for yourself. I guess that says a lot about you. You / Tango01 have been caught, called out and instead of submitting to reason you resort to attempting insults and trying to be funny. Tell you what: You ain't. I will refrain from commenting on your manners you are trying to defend.

Just some advice: Your awareness of fair use us flawed. Go check it out.

I understand Tango is enthusiastic to share news but the way he does might not be apreciated by everyone. He and Bill might also post things conveying opinions or stuff they normally do not endorse. Thus: Always name the originator.

Strangely the "other sites" you mention all handled this matter more professional. Tango01 has been asked before and he and Bill keep ignoring the very same thing they ask of others.

John is also aware of this and the "hurt" that you no love me no more, well I guess I can live with that. Your "no time for manners" speaks for itself and disqualifies you and your opinion in the matter. You are welcome.

RetroBoom29 Oct 2015 2:32 p.m. PST

I'm only seeing the edited post. I don't know how it was presented before, but I'm not understanding why you wouldn't want someone to share your article here, the most popular place for minis gaming on the net.

I'm not saying you are wrong for nothing wanting your content shared, but what I would say is that if that is the case, there are much more appropriate venues than a public blog on the internet. In fact a blog would be extremely inappropriate for such content. If this is a concern for you, thats valid, but in all fairness you need to understand the venue.

Das Sheep04 Nov 2015 9:51 a.m. PST

Wow.

I have never seen someone angry over someone linking something in the Internet, and even less when the link is trying to get positive attention and support for a project.

The minis are neat, and without TMP I would have never found out about the project, but with such a group running it I can't see it being something I could back. TMP is where I go to find out about new projects. If anything someone trying to get funding should feel blessed to have positive attention brought to it.

Twoball Cane04 Nov 2015 7:45 p.m. PST

I see tango get this kind of treatment here and there….I actually appreciate his efforts because more often than not…..I see a project or mini company, etc I was not aware of…..and many of those times it ends in me buying something.

Getting Tangoed should be a thing….and my hope is not a big deal

Like I have said before: I come here to get away from the hardships of life, and I look forward to seeing tango's name as well as many other friends I've never met but share my beloved hobby
