"Russia has sent a few dozen special-operations troops to Syria in recent weeks, Russian and Western officials say, redeploying the elite units from Ukraine as the Kremlin shifts its focus to supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia in late September launched a campaign of airstrikes in support of Mr. Assad's government, and President Vladimir Putin has said Russian troops won't play a role in ground combat. But Russian military experts and officials say small numbers of special-forces units—whose missions are rarely acknowledged publicly—are also on the ground in Syria.

"The special forces were pulled out of Ukraine and sent to Syria," a Russian Ministry of Defense official said, adding that they had been serving in territories in eastern Ukraine held by pro-Russia rebels. The official described them as "akin to a Delta Force," the U.S. Army's elite counterterrorism unit…"

No role in ground combat, huh?

Where have I heard that before?

No different from the US and other European countries having dozens or more spec ops troops in Iraq and Syria while claiming no "boots on the ground."

"The special forces were pulled out of Ukraine and sent to Syria," a Russian Ministry of Defense official said..

Ahh, their holidays must be over as there weren't any Russian forces there officially.

I'm pretty sure they were already there doing recon and evaluating base sites long before any planes landed.

Pretty sure they were in Iraq working with Iranian RG attacking American installations before that.

Now, if Russia is sending Cossacks into Syria, that would be novel.

Are they lost again?

I'd be surprised if the Russkie Spec Op were already there. Of course with "KGB" Putin. They may have been there already but just choose to mention it now. If anything old school KGB and any military professionals knows … OPSEC … Secrecy is important to military ops, etc. …

Foxnews…a sure source. Credible for fun

Sure an official WOULD say that… From Ukraine. Sure.

No one who knows a bit how things work would deny they are and were there, as all those playing their games in the M.E. have theirs as needed on the ground.
