I'm wanting to set up a silly Pulp Alley league called "The Mama's Boys" that will consist of Elvis, Norman Bates, Cody Jarret, Houdini … and whoever else qualifies (suggestions welcome!) But I need a mini for Houdini! He had distinctive frizzy hair and usually wears formal stage attire. Who knows of a figure that is either directly inspired by Houdini or could pass as Houdini if I gave him a wig? |

Try Pulp Figures:
link Unfortunately he comes in a set of 5 figures, though you could probably use his "lovely assistant" and the rabbit. |

Can't help you with a Houdini figure, but I'll nominate a member for your Mama's Boys: William Lyon Mackenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada off and on from 1921 to 1948. From a pulp perspective, he was (allegedly) an afficionado of spiritualism and frequently attempted to seek advice from the spirits of his (deceased) mother and other figures, including family pets. He is remembered in the Dennis Lee poem: William Lyon Mackenzie King Sat in a corner and played with string, Loved his mother like anything, William Lyon Mackenzie King. |

Couldn't you just represent him by a crate, box, trunk or something….say he's inside….trying to escape… |

Ha! Nice ideas! I do have this Pulp Figures set, so in a pinch it might do. I've also dug up a gangster in a tux with his hands behind his back (holding a gun) -- I'm thinking now a little modification could turn that gun into handcuffs and then I add some wild hair, and voila, Houdini! My wife suggested adding "Grendel" to the Mama's Boys gang, and I admit I'm intrigued by the idea. |

Your choice of Cody Jarret is nothing less than inspired! But if he doesn't randomly suffer from fissionable headaches which Ma must soothe away, he's just another lovable paranoid schizophrenic with a .45. Oh, and the "Magician" in the Pulp Figures set is so NOT Houdini that he would not only not do in a pinch, he wouldn't do in a collision of black holes. Try your gangster, but keep looking! TVAG |

On another board, a poster suggested Robert E. Howard be initiated into this gang, and that's another good choice. I believe my tuxedoed gangster conversion will make an acceptable Houdini but I'll keep looking for a clone figure. In an inspired moment, I found an old lady civilian figure that will be perfect for Norman Bates (as "Mother") once I add a knife. This gang is going to be led by an actual "Ma Barker" type, I have a nice old lady figure drinking a cuppa tea that I will use as a secret sinister criminal mastermind who controls these lost boys with an iron hand. Heh, yeah, Cody Jarrett is going to be good fun to see in action -- any slight he thinks is directed at his mama is going to send him into a berserk rage and every turn he'll have to pass a check against debilitating migraines that limit his actions…. |
