Just thought I'd share. I was looking over some pictures of inscriptions from Roman Forum, and I saw this one from the latter 4th century when looking for some inscriptions for my students to translate. I hadn't really paid attention to it before, but it's got some interesting names from later 4th century. This podium base is in a little corner of the Forum square, across from Caesar's temple. My picture is a little clearer than this wikipedia one, but it's the only one I can post (if it links…) link "To the lords of all, Gratian(us) Valentinian(us) and Theodosius…[something short but indescipherable]..Lucius Valerius Septimius Bassus [missing stone], prefect of the city, dedicated [this monument, whatever it was] to their majesty." Seems to date from 379 to 383 AD. By NO means a new find, but I thought I'd share for those interested in the disintegration of the western empire. |
