Most of my 10mm stuff has defaulted to 40mm wide by 20mm deep and for anything outside the WWII squad level, I use two such bases per unit and I use the 4" Kallistra hex. Anyway, I am now less keen on the look, even though it is a good compromise in practical terms for being able to represent both line, column etc. preferring instead the single base of the type of thing that Impetus sets out to do. I have done a napoleon and an ACW base using 60mm x 30mm and quite like the look. I thought that on those occasions that I needed to represent anything other than line, I would just slide another base in behind. Does anyone else do their 10mm on 60 x 30 as individual units and if so, has that brought any gaming problems? Thanks. |

for an ECW project I used the Baccus Polemos rules with Pendraken 10mm figures based on 80 x 40 mm (instead of the 60 x 30 mm which is the proposed scale for 6mm in these rules) works just fine and the base is large enough for different formations (even cav in 2 ranks) and diorama's Alex |

base my 6mm on 60x30 and use 4 bases per normal unit in BP. my 10mm ACW are on 20x20 which allows for flexibility on rule sets |

Whereas I use lots of small bases for rules flexibility and make up movement trays if needed. 30x30 also tesselates nicely, just put multiple bases together. I am less of a fan of huge bases as it reduces flexibility. My DBx based 20mm Ancients are on 60mm bases though, and they work well with Kallistra. One of my pals used 80mm bases, which are a bit big for me. |

My WSS and League of Augsburg 10mm are all based on 60mm frontage bases. We use Twilight of the Sun King rules, with two bases forming a "brigade". These bases are also suitable for Polemos WSS rules. I also have many of my 6mm ACW units on the 60mm bases, but as I mainly use Fire and Fury rules now I have also made some 20mm and 40mm frontage bases to give flexibility. Depth of bases is mainly 30mm, but some are only on 25mm depth as I had a lot of thin strip wood from dismantling an old IKEA Venetian blind. Most of my other 10mm stuff (ancients, medievals) is based on 40mm frontages, with varying depths- essentially DBA size bases. |

I have 60x30mm for my 10mm dark age armies. I like the diorama basing that it allows. I can reflect the type of soldier and the style of combat on a larger base. My ruleset for this period and these figures is Dux Bellorum. By how figures are based, you can determine who is shieldwall, who is warband, and who is skirmisher. I like the idea of basing units as elements, but I think it is problematic for some periods, specifically any which formation changes on the battlefield were common (march column to assault column to line, etc.). Following in Steamingdave47's plan, I think I may base my 10mm League of Augsberg on 60x30mm bases although I haven't found a ruleset that I like and which can easily accommodate a single base as a unit. |

Thanks all. I have the Dux Bellorum rules (on the Kindle) and agree that the element style of basing does help to visually determine unit type. Martin, interested as to your comments on the 60mm / 80mm issue with the Kallistra tile, as that is something I thought about before trying the 60mm. My napoleonic are Pendraken 10mm and the ACW are Kallistra 12mm, they do give a different look even though based on the same 60mm base, though I think I need to throw another figure on the 10mm base and tighten up the line. |

"Martin, interested as to your comments on the 60mm / 80mm issue with the Kallistra tile, as that is something I thought about before trying the 60mm." The 80mm bases work fine with Kallistra in all hex dimensions (across the points and across the sides), I just prefer 60mm wide. With small bases I can comfortably put four 30x30 bases in a block in one hex, if you put six in, the resulting 90mm wide section overlaps some of the hex (so I wouldn't use 90mm wide bases with Kallistra). If you don't have much terrain it is less of a problem, but why make life difficult for 10mm. "My WSS and League of Augsburg 10mm are all based on 60mm frontage bases. We use Twilight of the Sun King rules, with two bases forming a "brigade"." My TSK bases are 30x15, also two bases per brigade, but they are 2mm, not 10mm. I also use them for pike & shot, but I made up movement trays for the Neil Thomas Pike & Shot rules.

I do 30mm square (so 2 = what you want)10mm from Pendraken for ACW and ECW. My 10mm WSS is on 20mm square 30mm ACW – I get 6-9 usually 7-8. Frontage of 4, with 3 second rank (sometimes 4) in charge/fire pose through the gaps, and sometimes 1 or 2 at the back of the base reloading etc 30mm ECW 12-16 pike 4 wide, Muskets 4 wide at the front 9-12 on a base, getting looser towards the back
flic.kr/p/6HpB3Y20mm WSS Frontage of 3, 2 deep
flic.kr/p/8x2RAk I like the 30mm square best I think
