Hi during his summer holidays my son got back to painting . As he wanted to try painting ancients, a friend of mine gave him a pile of 28mm lead : 40 romans and 40 gauls. they are now all(well) painted and based by one. we'd like now to play with the minis but I have no ancients rules. If you get a nice set of rules for this few units (skirmish?) please let me know. Cheers Pascal |

Not sure how old your son is but these are the ones I wrote so my son (8) and I could play. PDF link It is fantasy combat but should work just fine for Ancients. |

link Base sizes are less of an issue with my rules. Romans (up to Foederati) would best be on 25mm frontages per figure. Gauls on 20mm per figure. But if you have them based differently the rules still work okay. Forty Romans would amount to six cohorts of six figures/bases each. Gauls would be in 16 figures/bases per unit, or two over-sized units of twenty each. Your four extra Roman bases could be an undersized seventh cohort, or a command element. The rules play like a skirmish game because combat is figure to figure. Free is always good, and quite often good enough: link The link to the free rules (three levels of complexity, choose the one that works for the least sophisticated mind playing the game) is the link at the top of the page The scale of the figures is immaterial. And basing is also. The game is played, like the purchase rules, figure for figure…. |

Lion Rampant would give a good game. Easy to find (Osprey). There are ancient variants out there (see link ) Easy to pick up and should work with 40 or so figures per side. (Probably 36 as game uses 6 or 12 per "unit") |

Song of Blades and Heroes would work well. It is very simple, and you can tailor it to what you want to do. I've done straight up skirmishes between opposing forces of Greek hoplites and psiloi. Worked just fine. |

Song of Blades is great, also recommend Lion Rampant which could convert to ancients easily. Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle game from GW are also an easy set to pick up and play, and are also very adaptable to historical periods. You might find one of the older softcover versions on ebay for cheap, they all have the core rules. |

Thanks a lot for your tips. we already played LOTR GW and song of blade and heroes and wanted to try something dedicated only to ancients. I've just oredered Lion Rampant and we'll try it with variants. Cheers Pascal |

Lion Rampant with an ancient version,I hadnt thought of that. I imagine that Roman tax collectors run away just as fast as Medievil ones. |

In case you haven't found it yet, here is a period variant geared towards the Gallic Wars: link |

How about Warhammer Ancient Battles? The rules are no longer printed by Games Workshop, but they can be found readily at many game shops and I have even heard for free if you do a torrent search … |
