I know this comes up regularly but i think its always worth getting new perspective etc.
Who appeals to you most as a commander in the ECW?

I must admit to being drawn to the Earl of Essex when I first started reading about the War. The more I read thouhg the more I admire a royalist! Jacob Astley, was the Kings most loyal commander of infantry. he was well respected and experienced and a solid commander. he was a man of honour and due to his surrender in the first civil war he then refused to go against his word and remained out of it until his death in 1652. I love that he was known for his famous quotes like at Edgehill
"O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me." which he followed promptly with the order "March on, boys!"

My favourite quote is when he surrendered to the Parliamentarians, prophetic and world wise
"Well, boys, you have done your work, now you may go and play—if you don't fall out among yourselves"

"Prince Rupert. He was Wrong but Wromantic. Plus he had a dog".

Try and get past the Victorianism of the dashing Cavalier and the dour Roundhead.

Parliamentarians like Waller and Fairfax Royalists like Rupert, Astley and Hopton when you read about them and how very good they where at there jobs and interesting caricatures.

There are others like Byron and Goring how could loss the war in an afternoon.

I think my favourite is James Graham 1st Marquise of Montrose created an army out of nothing and almost won Scotland for the King.
He was trated very shabaly by Charles II.
