Did they get that close and why did they bring that carty thing with them?

rmaker14 Oct 2015 3:53 p.m. PST

I think the "carty thing" is an abandoned artillery limber.

Didn't get that close!

…..the 93rd discharged three volleys: at 600, 350 and 150 yards respectively, however they did not get a chance to discharge one at point-blank range…

Also shouldn't it be… As Russell reported it….

….."thin red streak tipped with a line of steel", the title "Thin red line" was coined later….

Love that painting, I saw it in person and have a print of it in the man cave. Who is the charging cavalry and from what war was this?

KTravlos16 Oct 2015 3:18 a.m. PST

Crimean War, Charging cavalry is Russian hussars I believe, but no idea which regiment.

Mike Target16 Oct 2015 3:24 a.m. PST

It was the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
93rd (Highland) Regiment.

I believe that at least one Russian did get close enough to get bayonetted, though I forget where I read that.

93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment-

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were not formed until 1881 by the amalgamation ofthe 93rd with the 91st (Princess Louise's) Argyllshire Highland Regiment.
