"A senior United Nations official warns the partition of Syria is possible if the situation in the conflict-ridden country continues to deteriorate or is left in its current chaotic state.

Staffan de Mistura said he considers the possible partition of Syria as one of the worst-case scenarios, and he said the major powers and Syria's warring factions do not want this scenario to occur.

De Mistura, the secretary-general's special envoy for Syria, however, said he has noted a de facto partitioning already occurring…"

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria is correct …. this war in its current state will only result in a de facto partition of Syria …. a worrisome prospect in view of the fact that this would mean that groups like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State would be able to hold onto their territories.

However, it has already happened, so what the UN wants is irrelevant. Even if ISIS is wiped out, the Sunni regions will not agree to be under Shia or Assad control.

Like the UN can do anything.

I did see where one of their guys got popped for corruption and tax evasion though, which is promising.

We saw how well the UN did in the Palestinian/Israeli partition. On the other hand the UN forces in Cyprus seems to do well holding the line.

so what the UN wants is irrelevant. Even if ISIS is wiped out, the Sunni regions will not agree to be under Shia or Assad control.
That is really the bottom line … the factions in that region don't always do what the UN would like. And Daesh … they don't listen to anyone. And like rabid zombie-like creatures … they need to just die to the last member.

I thought it was the Turkish Navy and Army that carried out and maintain the partition of Cyprus. Not that anyone cares a rat's patoot, but I like to keep the facts straight.

Yes, Turkey was involved in the partition.
The UN peace keepers have been mostly keeping the peace along the partition line.

I'm thinking Russia might disagree with his assessment.

To me this amounts to the UN standing on a chair in a crowd yelling, "Ooo, ooo look at me I'm relevant!"

Yes, the UN was posted along the Partition Line in Cyprus. The UN force rotated every year or so. The Chinese a few years back provided the UN Force. About a Bn or two in strength. Wonder how the PRC troops liked Stuffed Grape Leaves ? Nothing like egg rolls or dumplings … evil grin
