Okay, I understand that a British infantry regiment would normally carry two sets of colours, the Kings (Queen's) colours (the Union Jack) and then a set of regimental colours. Which side is which? In most photos I've seen, looking at the regiment from the front, the regimental colours are on the right, and the King's Colours are on the left. (Of course, from the point of view of the soldiers, it is just the reverse). Is this correct?

Forgive me if I've gotten some of the terminology wrong, but I'm just a dumb Yank :)

Looking towards the battalion; the King's colour would be on the left and the Regimental colour on the right. Unless it's a Guards battalion, in which case its the opposite.

The Sovereign's Colour is the Senior Colour, therefore always carried on the Right, the Senior position. (In line Regiments this Sovereign's Colour is based on the Union flag as its field)That is the right as experienced by the Battalion in line. So if you are looking at the Battalion from 180, the Sovereign's Colour will be on YOUR left.

The exact same applies to HM Foot Guards, except that in the Guards, the Sovereign's Colour is the Coloured one, (Normally a field of Crimson) and the Regimental Colour is the Union Flag. So the Union flag would appear on YOUR right for a Guards Battalion.
