I'm currently painting up some early war (1805-1807-era) Russians in 28mm for skirmish gaming.
[/URL] It seems most manufacturers prefer to offer the late-war (1812-1815) uniforms. These Old Glory25s paint up pretty well, but I was wondering if any other manufacturer makes them also with this earlier uniform. Can anyone help? |

There is a list here…. link Scroll down to 'Russians – shako period' for the figures you're looking for!

I like the early Russians as well. Check out Foundry/The Casting Room, Warlord and Essex. |

I like those. These particular Old Glory figures remind me of some Hincliffe poses. |

Cerdic thanks for the link to the 28mm Napoleonic figures weblog. However, I would take issue with the categorization of Russian uniforms. There were actually 2 "early shako periods" for Russian infantry. The Old Glory 25s I've painted fit the 1805 unadorned taller black felt cylindrical shako that widens toward the top. From the link you supplied, I notice that Foundry also offers this early period shako. The second shako issued in 1807-1809 was shorter, reinforced with bands on the side and top, and had a white cord adornment. Troops were also issued with one-piece overalls rather than calf boots. The Essex 28mm figures offer a good representation of these changes. My source is the Haythornthwaite/Hannon Men-At-Arms Osprey book THE RUSSIAN ARMY OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS (1) |

The Brigade Games Russians (ex-Victrix) are really nice. |

DWilliams, thanks for the info. Napoleonic era uniforms are a bit of a minefield and it is easy to get bogged down. I've tried to keep it as simple as possible. Some people will be happy ignoring some details and others won't! If I tried to cover every change of uniform in every army I would be there till doomsday! You've got to draw a line somewhere and I reckon three main uniform periods is enough! |

Cerdic, fully understood, and please don't think this is criticism of a fine weblog. It's only because I'm painting figures from this precise period that I even care. Otherwise, I'm with you. |
