Thanks guys, yes, similar style (which is why he chose me I believe), but AB is a much better painter, he is an artist, I'm more a journeyman. |

" I'm more a journeyman." Good British understatement |

Beautiful I am trying to figure out a 15mm Napoleonic painting style that works for me – would appreciate some tutorials or an overview I see some places where you black line and some where you don't – what principles do you follow ? Prime black and leave line ? Any tips on black lining ? How do you select colours ? I know that colours need to be brighter at smaller scales, do you have a principle to follow ? Thanks John |

Hi John Hmmm, how do I describe my painting style? Let's start with, it depends on the subject, what the desired outcome is, and how long you want to spend on the process. To be honest I did not paint these figures in my usual style, for 2 reasons, Anthony Barton requested I use a white undercoat, (90% of my 15mm figures will generally be undercoated black) white undercoat does make your colours brighter however you have to be careful to not miss areas and it does add a step to the painting process (a black wash) and these figures were going to be used for display purposes. So start with your undercoat, I suggest black, it is much quicker at 15mm then to use white, (unless you are painting troops with white uniforms, then I use a white undercoat) and is much more forgiving to mistakes/missed areas, and you can achieve black lining without using a wash. |

for black lining don't use black, use paynesgrey instead, in case you varnish your figures, go for artist water colours which give you a better paint control and you can dilute to such a shade you want. As for base coating, I do white but then add a wash of deep strong violet providing already shades, enhancing detail – giving good definition, black is realy obscuring too much – in my view |

@von Winterfeldt Some great ideas – thank you. These are things I will definitely try @Gunnar Dunbar – thank you – haven't had much success with black prime. I can never seem to get coverage over the black, and by the time I have got the paint on in a couple of layers, I have obscured what should have been a black line anyway :( I looked some Bavarians on your log and I can see the style difference between them and the Dutch. I was looking at the Dutch again – really like the way you are doing the shakos. I honestly am not sure what it is that keeps bringing me back to your Dutch. There is some kind of consistency in the style or colour palette or something. I have bought a lot of 15mm Napoleonics this year and you guys just keep giving me ideas. Thanks John |
