Any of the TMP gentlemen here likes to give a light coat of satin varnish (I mean vallejo satin varnish, not gloss varnish) on their figures after gloss and matt protective varnishes, to make their minis stand out more?

Not me, I refer a more realistic matt finish.

There's no point using a gloss followed by a matt before finishing with satin. You can either leave out the matt stage or possibly just use one or two coats of satin without the gloss.

Horses yes, figures, no.

I use satin varnish. Not over coats of different varnish tho.

I use Ronseal floor varnish on my 54s, 20mm Ancients and 6mm FPW/APW stuff. It is supposed to be matt but actually dries satin. I rather like the effect.

For more serious twentieth century things I leave them matt.

Martin said it best. I love the look of a satin/semi-gloss finish on figures (I don't mind them looking a little like toy soldiers), but there are some periods I personally don't think it would look as good, and WWII and moderns are two of them. Just an opinion of course!
