"Somalia (1993) - Force on force - Battle Report" Topic

So my Saturday gaming club has started a new campaign.

We are using force on force as a rule set. But we are doing it more like a role play.

So, here is the the first after acthion report.

Mission

So the mission had two objectives for Me (Captain, U.S. Rangers, Black Hawks), Ant (Captain, U.S. Rangers, Humvee ) and Twig (Delta).

The two target building are of interest and may contain Mohamed Farrah Aidid's high ranking officers and intel. So the priority is to capture any one inside the two buildings. The buildings (on the picture above) are West Target Building on the far left centre and East Target Building, that's the walled building one down from the building site on the right hand side.

Troops and Equipment

Me: Airborn
9 Rangers – 2xSAW, 2x Grenade Launchers

Ant: Mechanised

Twig : Delta

2 Little Birds – Miniguns and Rocket pods.

Planning
After the mission brief we decided that Delta would send two units to each target building via little birds.

West Target building would be assaulted simultaneously with 4 Delta from the roof and 4 from the ground floor.

East Target building, that contains two buildings within the same compound would both be assaulted by the delta from the roofs.

My Rangers would fast rope down and secure the outside of East Target building. They would also breach the main gate to the court yard to allow Delta and there prisoners to exist.

Ants Rangers come on the board beside West Target building and will secure the outside. After the west building Delta and Prisoners will mount up in trucks and Hummers and evac. The rest of the convoy will then head to East target building and collect the rest of us.

Turn 1

Little Birds landed ontop of West Target Building and almost instantly came under small arms and RPG fire. Lucky received no serious hits.

Same with East building. The delta dismounted and already start taking down militia from the roof tops.

Ants Rangers drive to West target building and secure it. Two Tucks and one escort Hummvee start heading towards my position. Instantly hit a road block so head south.

Ants convoy hits a group of unarmed rioters. Twigs Delta prepare to enter the target buildings.

My squads secure the street and set demo charges on the main gates to the East Target Buildings.

Turn 3

As my guys go on overwatch and Twigs Delta enter the target buildings Ants convoy has to deal with the rioting crowd blocking the road. Although we have been fired on repeatedly these guys have not and rules of engagement means they have to take time to move the crowed out the way. After dispersing the crowd come under automatic and MG fire from another road block around the corner.

Blackhawk is sent over as 'eye in the sky' to check out the road block. As suspected, multiple enemy and a Pick up with MG.

Little Bird gunship is deployed to fire on this new road block but doesn't manage to take them out.

Turn 4

Delta emerge from the Target buildings with prisoners. No one harmed in the raids. Proving the skill of the Delta.

Ants Trucks find an alternative root, but are under fire from the road block who move down an alleyway.

Things in my street feel like they are becoming worse. Rooftop fire and now enemy's on the ground are attempting to engage my troops who wait for the convoy they can now see in the distance. Rioting civilians approach my men and they are forced to open fire on some enemy's who mix in with the crowed. Lucky no unarmed people are hit. Another group try to flank my men and are cut down by my guys overwatch.

A silver car moves through the rioters and my guys, worried that it could be a car bomb put a bullet into the cars radiators. The occupants get out the car and are 'upset', but still remain none violet. Another two approach from the north. One is a van, possibly full of enemy Somalians, behind this is a pick up with MG.

It's actually my first 'moden warfair' game.

It's now, for me at least about the look and feel of the game rather than the rules and competitiveness. That's actually one of the bonus's of this, all players are cooperative and the GM is making the world react, he's not trying to win.

Mdf buildings are a mix of gcmini.mybigcommerce.com but also simple card boxes for 'background' buildings. I used parts of the MDF buildings and spray templates.

The models are elhiemfigures.com with 1p coin for bases. Vehicles are a mix of different company's who produce 1:72

Turn 5

… One of my section's fires on the vans front grill. At this point it is unknown if it's militia or not. As the engine pores smoke a stray bullet enters the drivers compartment killing the front passenger. Fortunately for me my suspicions are correct as a number of Somalians exit the van and cut round through the building site supported by a pick up with MG.

The convoy loads up west target delta and VIPs and the ranger squads and head towards the easy target building.

Our air support is canceled due to sand storms and to much enamy fire!

Turn 6

The first half of the convoy arrives and the Delta embark with the VIPs.

One of my ranger sections and my Captain attempt to cut of the Militia from the van and there supporting pick up. Lucky they take down most of the aproching enemy's.

My Captain takes shrapnel to the face from the container he is using for cover during the fire fight. He has a sip of cola, drops it to the ground and continues the fight.

The rest of Ants convoy is heading across the empty market place, taking fire from the entire square.

The Hummer M60s spraying ammo at any and all targets manage to keep the Somarlians suppressed enough to get across the market place.

As my units start withdrawing towards the pick up point one team leader and his unit of rangers disperse the crowd of rioters to make sure they don't get in the way of our trucks.

Turn 7

All troops embark leaving no man behind, and all VIPs captured safe and unharmed.

All in all a success. It all went to plan and no one was KIA of left behind and not one Black Hawk went down! VIPs unfortunately turned out to be aid workers (this really happened in a capture mission) !!!

A Hummer has been his by a road side bomb. The 4 man crew unnamed take cover in a building. With only two other squads of rangers near by they must head over and mount a rescue… With no ground support and only a pair of little birds for cover!

Great battle report. I wish I was playing in this campaign the games look like a lot of fun.
