"Britain had secret plans at the height of the cold war to bury nuclear landmines in parts of Germany to thwart a Soviet attack, it emerged yesterday. The 10 proposed devices would have had the combined explosive power of more than five Nagasaki A-bombs, resulting in craters more than 180 metres (600ft) deep and would have spread radioactive contamination across vast areas of the countryside if detonated. The weapons, codenamed Blue Peacock, were to be left buried or submerged and detonated by a wire from up to three miles away or by an eight-day clockwork timer. They were also to be fitted with anti-handling devices which meant that if gunfire pierced the hull or the weapon was moved or filled with water, it would detonate in 10 seconds…" Full article here link How to wargame with nuclear land mines? Easy – if it goes off, everyone looses. Pack up the figures and go home. |

I suspect liberal deployment of M-80s (that's 1/4 of a stick of dynamite, Armand) under a plywood, or foam terrain board, with microarmor sprinkled about on top might work. |

If the Nuclear landmines had been found they could have been destroyed without a big bang. Using a shaped charge the device would be destroyed without detonation. With shaped charge aimed downward there would also be minimal contamination. By the way, that is how US would destroy nuclear weapons if they were being threatened with capture. |

They wouldn't have time to do that, since it sounds like they are similar to those the USA had available. Those were to be deployed at critical chokepoints, like bridges, major freeway interchanges, etc., etc., and the engineers were to keep them in visual sight until they detonated them. So, if the enemy got close, I suspect they'd detonate them before they had a chance to do anything about it. |

So if the British detonated THEIR Nuke Mines and we detonated OUR ADM's plus tacnuke and chemical warfare, the WWIII version of 'No-Mans Land'(No-Life Land) would stretch from where to where and how wide??? Not to mention what the French would do on their border… |

Just just say that the forecast would be for increased instant sunshine (followed by large mushrooms) from the Baltic to the Swiss border… |

if I can remember correctly didn't legion 4 have some involvement with these mines (thread is here somewhere)? |

My question would be did the West German government know of this plan and would they have a say or veto in the detonation of nuclear weapons on their soil by 'allies'? I must do some research on this. Thanks for posting this as I had no idea this programme existed until now. Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

Yes, they were aware Rod. One of their guys really wanted a bunch of those Davy Crocketts, since he thought those were great, but apparently we demurred on that, because he was a bit too gung ho about getting those. Those were the pocket nukes with the 1.2 – 2 mile range. |
