Remembering Marx WOW Figures

If you were a kid in the 1960s who loved history and toy soldiers, you probably had a WOW figure!

I just purchased The British are Coming! rules from Stone Mtn Miniatures, and they arrived a couple of days ago. I was looking through them, and I wonder if something is missing. I was looking at the Fire section (first stop for a war gamer…). Para 6.27 is the Procedure for firing: Determine MR of firing unit and range. Cross index the firing unit's MR with the unit's weapon type to obtain the FP per figure… This seems to indicate there should be a table or two involving firing, but I don't see one. I have two blue Melee and Morale Tables/Sequence of Play cards, and a green Status Counters card. Is there another card I'm missing for firing?

Appreciate any help from anyone who has the rules, or from the distributor. Stone Mtn says they just sell them as they receive them…

My edition is from Mindgames and though it reads differently is close.

Page 11 (top of page) has a Volley Table which determines fire factors by cross referencing the weapon with range and with class….

Below it is a modifiers table:
Target in cover or skirmishing x1/2
Target in column x1.5
Enfilade x2

See anything like that?

I have to ask, what are the different weapons listed, as I would only think there would be smoothbores and rifles?

Thanks for the reply JSchutt. My copy says it is from Tempest Games, and says it is Version 2.1 at the top of the even numbered pages. I don't see any "Volley Table". Page 11 in my copy is the start of Section 2, Sequence of Play. Section 6.0 Fire starts on page 29. Would you be willing/able to scan that section and send it to me?

As far as "Tempest Games" goes, there is a snail mail address on the inside of the front cover, and is the same as that listed under Manufacturers on TMP. Googling Tempest Games brought up a site for a company in Cedar Rapids that looks like it's focused on fantasy.

My copy of the rules are buried, but from memory…

There are a few different weapons as MR covers not only small arms (smoothbores and rifles) but also varying sizes of artillery.

I host The British Are Coming Yahoo group…you may want to pose the question there to see if we can assist you with what appears to be a missing table:

The game company itself is most likely kaput. TCS used to carry the rules, and the current owner of TCS was selling them a few years ago, but last couple of emails to him went unanswered, so the only company that I know that are selling them are Wargaming Miniatures (AKA Stone Mountain). They should check their other copies to see if that issue is across the board or just a one-off.

<edit> Okay, I couldn't stand not having the correct answer, so I dug out my copies. I have both a Tempest version (second edition, 1990) and a Mindgames version (same edition, but having the TCS address as opposed to the Tempest address).

Charts are slightly different…Tempest has 2.1 charts, Mindgames has 2.0.

There are the following charts:
2.1
two Fire and Movement (with 15mm on one side and 25mm on the other)
two Sequence of play/Melee and Morale Tables

2.0
one 15mm Fire and Movement with Melee and Morale on the back
one 25mm Fire and movement with Melee and Morale on the back
one Sequence of Play

So you are missing the Fire and Movement charts for version 2.1 with 15mm one on side and 25mm on the other.

Shoot me an email and I will send you the scans. preds81 at yahhoo.com. I am heading out in a bit to host a tour at Perryville so if you send the email now I can take care of this ASAP, otherwise it might be early next week.

Just in case… No idea what the second number in parenthesis is…
Formating below stinks but I think you can figure out how the columns go.

American rifles 0-4"(5"). 4.1-6"(8")
German rifles. 0-3"(4"). 3.1-5"(6")
Muskets. 0-2"(3"). 2.1-4"(5")

Class 1. 12. 5
Class 2. 10. 4
Class 3. 8. 3
Class 4. 6. 2
Class 5. 4. 1

Thanks again JSchutt. Somewhere in the rules it said it was designed for 15mm, but 25mm ranges were in parentheses, and the numbers look reasonable for such – basically a short range and a long range. I guess when they went to Version 2+ they decided it was worth separating onto two cards…

It's the second set of data I'm a little confused about. I'll have to go back and look, but IIRC (I'm at work and can't go re-read at the moment) I don't recall anything about classes of troops – just differing MR values. You're right about the formatting, is it supposed to indicate that "Class 1" troops have a FP/figure of 12 at short range and 5 at long range?

Thanks,
Dave

Yep

Hope this will help to clear things up.
There seem to be two versions of these rules, both authored by Chris Bell. The first copyrighted in 1988 was published by Mindgames. It has the table above described by JSchutt. The other edition copyrighted in 1990 was published by Tempest Games. It has the paragraph 6.26 referred to by codiver in the original posting in this thread. On the second page of this set it is noted as being the "Second Edition" of TBAC. In the back there is an Infantry Fire Table that lists FP per Unit MR and Range. I think that's what codiver was looking for.He must be missing the Fire and Movement Tables.
