Ok, I'm obsessed with my current wargaming project. But from creative obsession comes good content, and I hope this qualifies.

It was actually music that got me initially thinking about the Spanish Civil War, specifically the British folk group Na-Mara's "The Bite", and now that I'm gaming the conflict I need a bit more than Na-Mara's 4-song SCW inspired LP on repeat.

After plumbing the depths of Spotify's extensive collection of music, I made a playlist for SCW gaming, and it is now public if you search for "Spanish Civil War" on Spotify. Obviously, if you don't have Spotify, this post is less useful to you (although you can enjoy the service with commercials for free if you wanted).

The playlist consists of songs from the war, songs inspired by the war, songs that feel vaguely like Spain to me, and one or two related pieces that seem to work. Feedback and suggestions for some groups or songs I've missed are more than welcome.

There's also an excellent WWII playlist available (not created by me) which includes snippets of radio programs from the period.

I hope you enjoy the playlist as much as I have. Creating it continues to reinforce what appears to be a Natural Law of the Universe: Fascists have better uniforms, but democracies make the best music.

I'm pretty sure if you right click the playlist item you can share the link. Can't seem to find it by searching, but it sounds very interesting!

Rome's Flowers From Exile album is all about the SCW. And it's an incredibly moving and beautiful album.

Can't speak to their availability on Spotify but here are a couple of favorites:

Ay Carmela – Rolando Alarcón

Jarama Valley – Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger

Si me quieres escribir – Rolando Alarcón

"Remember the war against Franco
That's the kind where each of us belongs
Though he may have won all the battles
We had all the good songs"

Wow, Spotify really wants to make me look like an idiot today, but the problem appears to be on their end. The playlist exists and is shared publicly, but strangely I can't load it on my tablet, only on my PC.

EDIT: Resolved – Spotify just released a new version. I think if you install it you won't have a problem playing the list.

Here's a link to the playlist: link

VCarter – that's awesome. Where's it from?

Anlieher – all of those songs are on the list already, those versions and those by other artists too.

Bruntonboy – interesting version of a classic! Not available on Spotify so I can't add it, but I think I have 2 Spanish versions of that song on the list already.

The Trojan Bunny – hadn't heard of them, but enjoying them now. I put a few songs from that album onto the list, thanks!
