Hi I am planning to host a game for some friends set in Rhodesia. The general idea of the scenario is a bunch of ZANLA guerrillas trying to infiltrate from Mozambique while four sticks of RLI try to stop them. The RLI is supported by 1 K-Car as air cover and 1 G-Car (with one of the sticks above) to try a vertical envelopment. It is, in gaming terms, a powerful force. My friends and my eldest son will play as Rhodesians. I will act as a short of "dungeon master" and will play the insurgents. I am not interested in winning, in a traditional sense, but in making the scenario as much a challenge for my friends and son as I can get. Victory conditions will be very straightforward: if the Rhodesian players stop, kill or force to retreat back to Mozambique all ZANLA guerrillas, they win the game. If at least 25% of the ZANLA force manages to infiltrate Rhodesia (i.e. they reach the table border opposite their initial deployment area) ZANLA wins. Any other result will be considered indecisive. Now, my problem is -and that's why I am looking forward to some input- how many guerrillas should I field to make the game interesting and challenging, but not impossible to win for either side? I was thinking about a 3-1 ratio to the guerrillas (counting with the air support as additional 4-men sticks means that I need to field at least 64 guerrillas… I have not that many figures, but I plan to "recycle" casualties). By the way, I plan using TooFatLardies B'Maso ruleset. Thanks in advance! |

link Take a look at this. You can preview the entire book and make decisions about your force pool. The ZANLA should be much lower in troop quality. With evenly matched forces, my gaming club uses a 2:1 ratio. But with something like this, the ZANLA won't stand a chance with anything lower than 3:1. But that's just my opinion. Sounds like fun. |

Ideally, the scenario should account for the insurgents winning in some manner other than a stand-up fight, ala how TFL did it in their Vietnam game. In that case, 2 to 1 should be decent. If it's a plain knock down, drag out fight, 3 to 1 usually but I find most rules make such a setup a foregone conclusion where the higher-tech army almost always wins. |

Thanks for the tip, Ben. You are right, Weasel. That's why the victory conditions for the insurgents will reward they avoiding contact as much as possible. The problem for the regulars will be to locate and make contact with the ZANLA guerrillas. There are just 16 soldiers plus one helo, which will force them to spread themselves thin on the ground, hopefully giving the insurgents a chance to infiltrate. I think I will make a solitary "dry run" to get a feeling of the scenario, with 2-1 and 3-1 ratios and see which one is more interesting. |
