Wondering if they were used or flown, or just the general Royal Standards/Army Commanders. Just thinking that at Towton their were a lot of men entitled to carry a Banner, and if they would have. Means an awful of of flags about on that day. |

The leader of a retinue would have a banner on the field of battle. As in later times one of the purposes was to act as a rallying point and to indicate where the retinue commander was. |

Wasn't Towton fought during a blizzard? If so I am not sure that Banners could be flown that day. |

Wasn't Towton fought during a blizzard? If so I am not sure that Banners could be flown that day. It was fought with snow falling, though I'm not sure about a blizzard … And even so why would that prevent you flying a banner? |

I have to second MajorB on this. Snow should not keep banners from being flown. |

I suspect Every Lord, Duke and Knight who was entitled to have a banner would of had his banner carried, the size of the banner mattered, I have a copy of guidelines somewhere. |

Thank you all. Must have been at least a 100 Banners on each side at Towton. |
