Americana craft paint, Georgia Clay. It's a nice full brick red, yet with a touch of scarlet. I use it over a white spray prime coat, like Walmart Flat White. "They" keep taking out of production my favorite colors, going back to Heritage British Scarlet! I picked this one up just to have another shade of red. But when I tried iron a Loyslist coat, it looked perfect. Let's do some math here. Americana comes in a squeeze bottle, 2 oz for $1.49 USD (and less if on sale). They never go dry in the bottle. GW Citadel paints 0.4 oz for $4.00 USD in a "pot" that's guaranteed to waste half of it. Vallejo about the same as GW. Better use it up within a year. |

There are around a dozen paints by Americana as part on my painting desk, and they seem to be very good. Next time visiting a local craft store, I'll see what Georgia Clay looks like, thanks for the tip. |

I'd like to see a finished figure with it – looks at tad too much like brick to me but I'll withhold judgement for now. |

Perhaps it is working for Winston because it is being used on a white primer. |

That sure isn't the color of the dirt around here. |

Well then try Mississippi Mud. |

I live in Georgia and the clay down here is a rust-orange. First time I moved down here I saw some cars that I thought had bad cases of rust on them but turned out they had mud splashed up on them… |

Americana's Mississippi Mud is a great color! |

Americana's "Acorn Brown" is a great color for Confederate butternut uniforms. |

Andrea makes an awesome red set if you like using a layered approach. |

The minute you first open a pot of GW, the clock starts ticking. That paint has the shelf life of a sick fruit fly. |

Another good red is Deltas Ceramcoat's "Moroccan Red". |

"Moroccan Red" is my go to red. |

The minute you first open a pot of GW, the clock starts ticking. That paint has the shelf life of a sick fruit fly. And the pot has a wretched design. |

I painted the bases for my ACW "Orphan Brigade" with Delta's Creamcoat's "Georgia Clay." Other Creamcoat colors to consider for clay are: Cayenne Terra Cotta Burnt Sienna |

Bit orangey for my taste. I use Delta Ceramcoat's Dark Red. |

I am going by a plate I saw once that had the officers in brilliant scarlet, and the hatmen in a nice brick red. I tested it on a random King's Mountain guy, and will do a unit soon. either Loyalists or dismounted British dragoons. Piccies to follow when they hit the table top. |
Big Red | 04 Oct 2015 5:55 p.m. PST |
I use a 50/50 mix of Americana Country Red and Burnt Sienna over white primer. |

I find Red Oxide (one of the standard artist's acrylic colours) is a good match. |
davbenbak | 05 Oct 2015 8:09 a.m. PST |
Silly question but saves me a google search…where do you get Americana paints? |
Winston Smith | 05 Oct 2015 8:36 a.m. PST |
Craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, A C Moore, etc. |

I have used these craft acrylic paints for several years now. It is only recently that any of them have gotten good enough for hobby use. Two comments: (1) a few months ago I did a thorough A-B of the four leading brands. Delta Ceramcoat was the winner by a country mile. Better coverage, better consistency, better everything, and still only $1.12 USD online / $1.49 USD from Jo-Anns. (2) To be fair to the "hobby" paints they are more finely ground. If you use the "craft" acrylics they can obscure very fine detail such as wood grain on gun carriages. |

Been using craft acrylics for years – and long ago here on TMP pointed out the price disparity between them and hobby paints and got plenty of grief for it, too. Nice to see you all coming around. I think I have about 150 bottles of craft paint, some 20 years old and still useful. No kidding. I limit my craft paints to metallics mostly now. But some of the craft paints work well for that, like gunmetal colors. I tend to agree the Georgia Clay might not be red enough for most British uniforms, though maybe represents well the "autumn fade" of spring issued coats. |

Should say I limit my "hobby paints to metallics". |

>Americana's "Acorn Brown" is a great color for Confederate >butternut uniforms. Funny how "butternut" was actually supposed to be gray, but it just went wrong when they tried using the vegetable dyes. |

Been using this for years for my Brits. Glad you found it. It gives that 'weathered / faded" look. A;ways use either Americana or Folk Art brand acrylics. Can't go wrong. And the price is good for 2 oz bottles. |

Any alternative to "Georgia Clay" red? Up here in "the great white north" at my local Michaels they have plenty of reds but not that one. (I love the fact that your chosen red reflects fading – most realistic) Also, are you using acrylic & is this on plastic?(I only have plastic) |
Delbruck | 10 Dec 2015 4:09 p.m. PST |
Delta Ceramcoat also sells a Georgia Clay (#2097). Very close in color is Ceramcoat Adobe Red (#2046). This is similar to Georgia Clay, but slightly more red. In addition, I find Ceramcoat Red Iron Oxide (#2020) a very good brick red. It is slightly darker than Georgia Clay/Adobe Red. |

Thanks for the info (Delbruck), however my store doesn't carry the Delta Ceramcoat line. I think i'll try Big Red's suggestions for the Americana alternative mix. (Country Red & Burnt Sienna) Thanks again. |

After reading this I've ordered some Americana Georgia Clay:
I'm very happy with the shade and the paint itself. Excellent value for money as well, recommended. Cheers SP |

Slightly different question. I recently acquired some painted plastic figs. & was worried about paint chipping.Any suggestions regarding whether I should put a coating over them for preservation? Preferred products? |

I am glad to read this, as I am about to do some SYW British. I use the hobby store craft paints (Creamcoat, Americana, Folk Art and Anita) a lot! I have probably a hundred different shades because I don't like to mix base coats, my never being bale to match it for touch up. I also use Vallejo and can tell you that you can mix any of these craft paints with Vallejo, which I do all the time for shading and highlighting. Terry |

Would the same brick red be appropriate for Hanoverian uniforms too? Terry |
Terry37 | 10 May 2016 12:45 p.m. PST |
I am also looking at another hobby paint, Creamcoat Moroccan Red 02552. Since I game in 15 MM, this seems a little better shade being less brown that the Georgia Clay color, but still not a bright fire engine red. Terry |
Wealdmaster | 18 May 2016 5:16 a.m. PST |
What might alternatives for this be in Vallejo or P3 for example. I think they have finer pigments even and better for airbrushing which I'm now experimenting with. Even non airbrush paint can be thinned and sprayed on with airbrush. |
Terry37 | 18 May 2016 7:45 a.m. PST |
Wealdmaster, I use Vallejo along with the cheaper hobby store paints (they also mix well together which I do often). The closest Vallejo red in my paint box is Red 926. But it really looks more of a crimson and is noticeably darker than either Moroccan Red or Georgia Clay. There may be other Vallejo colors that work that I don't have. Terry |

I tried the Foundry British Red Coat paints and thought they were a bit too light. Nice paint, though not a nice price. |

I used to have the perfect red formula figured out. Ceramcoat maroon with any number of bright reds from a variety of makers as highlights. This was the old ceramcoat that was more opaque and covered better. The new ceramcoat maroon I bought to replace the bottle which was about 25 years old is not the same, paler and not very good coverage. |
