Is it just me or are not all of Mirliton's Italian condotta figures listed on their website anymore?

vexillia02 Oct 2015 2:23 p.m. PST

They look like they're all there to me – bit.ly/1MOXnZD

I have stocks if it helps.

Thanks. Not sure what I was thinking there. I'm trying to find 14th century italian communal figures. I'm thinking that that period falls right in between mirliton's lines.

What you need is the Italian Commune wars range. My listing is here.

Did 14th century Italian commune armies use radically different armor than English and French HYW armies? None of these guys have any plate.

The Communal range figures are 13th century. Some of the foot would work but the knights would look very old fashioned.
Italian 'knights' were at the fore of armour fashion with much of the best stuff being made there.
14th century murals etc often show infantry in open faced bascinets with quite a pointed crown. Others are still wearing the much rounder cervelliere as on some of the Mirliton figures.

The Sinalunga fresco of 1363 gives a pretty good idea of the look of infantry and mounted though whether the crests worn are accurate is debatable. The painting was done for the men who were there which might indicate accuracy or a desire to pimp up their appearance in art.

Thanks Swampster. You'd recommend just regular HYW figures for these Italians, then?

Swampster04 Oct 2015 1:44 p.m. PST

The Italians seem to have had some fancy brigandines, fancy horse armour and such like, but on the whole HYW will work.

Any infantry and cavalry figures out there that immediately jump to mind as Italians of this period, Swampster?

Swampster05 Oct 2015 10:45 a.m. PST

Not really.
For much of the 14th century there are a lot of mercenaries coming from north of the Alps so using whatever period knights you like the look of would fit the bill. I don't know of any range with the rather distinctive horse armour shown on the Sinalunga fresco.
Donnington's range is probably the best for selecting the knights by period. but don't tend to have the more decorative jupon often shown in Italian pics.

For infantry, the look for local foot is summed up by something like Sercambi's pictures link from the late 14th century. I can't think of any figures with bucklers like these. Pavisiers are a bit easier to come by or by adding a pavise to a spearman.
