Why is the norm to refer to Napoleon by his first name?Almost every other figure from history is referred to by their surname. The era of history bears his first name.

Why is he not referred to as Bonaparte?

Anyone with any ideas?

Probably the same reason as Victoria and 'Victorian' or Elizabeth and 'Elizabethan' perhaps?

The obvious reason is that he was proclaimed Emperor Napoleon, so like other monarchs is referred to by using his first name.

Of course, some – like Corelli Barnett – deliberately call him Bonaparte to express their hostility towards him and his regime and to suggest that he was not a legitimate ruler. This was the position adopted by the British government and Hudson Lowe when he was exiled to Saint Helena.

You would not wont to mix him up with his brothers.
