Can anyone tell me if the Swiss in Spanish service followed the convention of having 50% of the first battalion comprised of Grenadiers in Bearskin?

Quiles01 Oct 2015 11:31 a.m. PST

No.

Swiss Regiments had two battalions of four fusilier companies and one grenadier company each.
This was theoretically and could change as required by campaign requirements.

Hope this helps.

Oh Bugger01 Oct 2015 11:42 a.m. PST

Thanks Quiles did the grenadier company wear Bearskins?

Porthos01 Oct 2015 1:08 p.m. PST

I am not Quiles, but according to "Spanish Infantry of the Early Peninsular War" by Gerard Cronin and Stephen Summerfield, the Grenadiers wore the tall black bearskin cap with heavily embroidered triangular bag in regimental facing colour with tassel (page 122).
IOncidentally I find this a very useful book and am looking forward to part II about the cavalry and artillery.

Thanks Porthos I guess if the Irish foreign regiments grenadiers wore the Bearskin then the Swiss foreign regiments genadiers should too. I'd like to know for sure though.

Yes they definitely wore bearskins. Grenadiers of the Reding regiment at Bailen, in bearskins, are illustrated on the cover of Vol 2 of the reprint of the standard Spanish history of the war (Arteche).

Thank you Teodoro that's just what I needed to know.

By the way you can see some Swiss and Irish grenadiers in my site:
