"While I await the arrival of my first sample 1864 Danes from North Star I am starting to do a bit of research on the war, which isn't easy as there is not a lot of information on it in English. I have bought Tom Buk-Swienty's book on the conflict and this is very good indeed, although it does have one of those peculiar structures where the first third of the book is about the day before the climactic Battle of Dybbøl. I have skipped this and started with the second third of the book which tells the story of the reasons for the war and the initial actions. I will read the opening after this!…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

If someone has any knowledge of the colour of the Danish army's greatcoat I would be grateful! |

Click on the link above and there are some plates showing Danish troops on the site. If you cannot do that for some reason, I've had a look and I would say various shades of dark grey by the looks. |

The 1864 series has good uniforms for the Danes. I would say Dark blue. Also look at the paintings on the attack of the 8th brigade, and the battle of Missunde. Indeed head over to my blog, Leadhead PhD, and download the pdf in which I collect all our FB group posts on this war. It has lists of resources. |

There seems to have been two greatcoat colours. I have a colour plate from the Tøjhumuseet, København (published 1991), that shows a dark blue coat that matches the colour of the uniform tunic, and a blue/grey coat, similar to the trouser colour. This is also apparent in the painting of the 8th Brigade that Konstantinos mentions above, where at least two of the men in the front rank have lighter greatcoats. Also of interest on that same colour plate is the statement that the company flag was carried by the bugler and that the battalion colour was not carried in 1864 |

There was the dark blue greatcoat, and some of reserves got a ligth blue. There was no official flag carried into battle in 1864. What you see is campflags, which are flags used in the field to mark where your unit is supposed to camp. These flags were unimportantfor the unit, and nobody fougth for them. In 1864 they were simply left in the fieldworks when they were stormed. |

Regarding the greatcoat colour I will be painting my Danes with a dark blue coat, interesting to know a lighter colour greatcoat appears to have been worn. Could this lighter colour have the product of weathering and bleaching of the dye?! |

hornblaeser, thanks for that flag info |

Thanks some useful information here. The weird colour cast in the 1864 series made me not trust it (what is this strange modern fashion for shooting in what looks like colourised black and white. The final Hobbit filn suffered from it too) |

If it of interest, I have scanned the colour plate I mentioned in an earlier post and posted it on my blog here stracmark.blogspot.co.nz. |

Hi Stracm, great blog, I have just ordered my first batch of Danes. I am gaming with Neil Thomas' 1 hour wargaming book so don't need massive numbers of Figs but here's hoping Northstar bring out a range of Danish dragoons. Recently used my Northstar Austrians & Prussians for scenario 10: late arrivals from the Thomas book which was very enjoyable given I have limited gaming space. I think there is plenty of game scenarios to pitch these Danes against their Germanic foe ;) Thanks a gain for sharing your blog, it was very informative and interesting. |
