Was the attempted rescue of Charles Gordon worth all the effort in money and lives? Always serious doubts by politicians and military men. What is your opinion?

He was dispatched and did not follow orders. On the other hand I think he took the only moral choice

No. By the time the expedition got underway, the Mahdi was in a position to take Khartoum whenever he pleased, and appears to have been using it as bait to draw in and defeat British columns. I expect the fact that those proved tougher than Hicks Pasha's rabble came as rather a shock.

Add the fact that Gordon probably didn't WANT to be rescued.

Actually, the Mahdi had some doubts about being able to take the city at the time the relief expeditions were launched. I believe the initial plan was to just starve out the city, but once the British began to get closer the timetable needed to be moved up. Once the White Nile dropped to a point where the Mahdi's forces could cross unmolested the final assault was launched.

The book Khartoum by Michael Asher gives a good account of this.

On a political level it had to be done.

You can't expect to be taken seriously as the pre-eminent global empire and not respond when your representatives or forces are threatened or attacked!

Extreme mission creep.
